The Hostelz.com Review
The YHA Gagudju Lodge in Cooinda is in a great location in the centre of Kakadu National Park. It is very close by the launch for the Yellow Waters boat cruise, which is one of the highlights of the park. It is also centrally located to explore Obir and Jim Jim and Twin falls, the other major landmarks.
The hostel has a great range of accommodations, from campsites to cabins. Although the budget twin rooms are a reasonable price considering the location, they really do feel "budget." They are fairly clean, but very basic and in need of renovation. They look like a portacabin from the outside.
The facilities are excellent, with a large clean shower block and a laundry near the rooms. There is a shop on site, a restaurant, and a bisto which serves cheaper meals such as burgers until 9 pm. There is a bar and bottle shop which are open till 10 pm. If you want to relax when it gets too hot, there are a couple of nice pools for a dip.
The YHA is easy to find, it is clearly signposted from the Kakadu Highway.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
We intended to stay in the motel section of Gagudji Cooinda but it was "booked out" — although to us it actually looked half empty so we stayed at the "outback quarters." My partner and I have traveled around the world and stayed in many hostels, in all honesty, this was the WORST place I have ever stayed! Yes, it was clean BUT the room was tiny — there were three people (a single bed and a bunk) and we could hardly walk between the beds. The air conditioning (which you have to have on) was noisy; the "kitchen" (a barbecue) had no plates, cups etc, and stunk of raw meat. All in all, the whole experience was disgraceful. I would rather camp there in the heat surrounded by flies than pay $30 to sleep in what can only be described as a room the size of a cupboard. As someone who lives in the "Territory" and regularly takes people out to Kakadu, I found this to be a disgraceful experience and one we won't be repeating. — Kelly (2005-09-28)
