The Hostelz.com Review
This is a nice, quiet hostel about 2 kilometres outside of the main part of Waitomo. The bedrooms are clean and simple. There are no locks on the doors. There are no lockers either, but the staff are able to store valuables for you (but with no record of who stored what - this isn't necessarily the safest option either). The toilets are clean and functional.
There are camping facilities available, as well as a swimming pool. The lodge is in a nice area, but a bit isolated if you don't have a car. It's a 15 minute walk to the nearest shops (which is only a general store -- there are no supermarkets in walking distance).
The hostel has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the staff can book you on a number of caving and horse back riding activities in the area.

Nice smaller hostel, very quiet in the off season anyway. Work available on the surrounding farm if you want it. Only draw backs are the lack of security, no locks on the doors, and no place to keep valuables except in the office strong box that everyone seems to have acess to anyway.
And a bit of a long walk on an unsafe road to the nearest village. The shuttle mentioned on the brochure doesn't exist. Friendly staff though, who will quite often give you a lift if they can. The rooms are clean, the kitchen is well-equipped, and the showers are decent.
