The Location
HI - Cradle Mountain - Cosy Cabins Backpackers & YHA Hostel is located amongst the greenery as part of a larger caravan/cabin and camping facility no more than a five-minute drive from the entrance to Cradle Mountain National Park. Just off the main road heading in or out of the park, it is well sign-posted but the hostel rooms are set a little ways back from the check-in office. It is conveniently situated across the road from the transit centre. Shuttle buses run from the transit centre into the Cradle Mountain National Park. The grounds are well situated amongst the bush, and the buildings seem to be thoughtfully placed for minimal environmental impact.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms for the hostel are arranged in three separate cabins set within the bush, with no more than four bunks to a room. Two blocks of rooms are set in wooden cabins, generally with two bunk beds to a room, and each bunk features its own bedside light. There is a room heater inside for wintertime, which is wonderfully warm, but we wonder how hot the rooms might get in summer! The bathroom and shower facilities are extremely clean, and the showers each have a heat lamp -- another thoughtful luxury for cold weather.
Common Spaces
Common spaces are the kitchen areas, which are again clean and well kept, with a wood stove. The only drawback is there is no drinking water from the taps, and instructions are to boil the water for minimum three minutes. We're not sure if this is temporary or a permanent arrangement, but it does require a bit of planning. The other unofficial common space appears to be the deck along the cabin providing access to the rooms -- while it's a great place to appreciate the beauty of the area, it can get a bit noisy for those inside the rooms.
Additional bonuses include a small store where you can purchase food and alcohol, and a vending machine. The reception area also has a terminal for internet access. Be aware of the additional costs for linen if you haven't got your own sleeping bag, and relatively high prices for food in the store.
Summary
Overall, it is a fantastic place to stay. Quiet and clean, and set in a beautiful location, it is the only hostel situated by Cradle Mountain. Though it is a few dollars more expensive than the average hostel, considering its remote location and how well kept it is, it's well worth it. If you need to be close to a television, this is not the place for you -- however if you want a place where you can enjoy the beauty of Tasmania, it is highly recommended.
