The Hostelz.com Review
Deco Backpackers is a lively hostel in Queenstown with a beautiful view of the lake and mountains. Free wireless internet is available in the hostel while dozens of shops, restaurants, and bars are a short distance away.

The Location

The hostel can be found at 52 Man Street, five minutes walk from the town centre (climb the stairs at the end of Rees Street, then turn left). There is also some off-street parking if you arrive by car.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The sleeping quarters are spread out over a few buildings, with the kitchen and dining room in a separate block. The walkways between buildings are generally covered to protect you from the elements. Dorm rooms sleep four to six people on comfortable bunk beds. A lot of people go for nights out, so a dorm room is not ideal if you want an early night. There isn't space for much furniture in the rooms apart from some large shelves which are accessible from both bunks. Free lock-up storage is available near the reception (not in the rooms). The bathroom facilities are modern, fairly clean, and adequate for the number of guests.

Common Spaces

The kitchen and dining room at Deco Backpackers are well-equipped but perhaps not big enough for such a large hostel when many guests want to cook in the evening. It can be quite messy by then as well, since the common areas are cleaned once a day early in the morning. You may prefer to dine out at one of the many excellent eateries in the town centre. The atmosphere in the common area is lively and it is certainly a good place to meet other travelers. If you want some peace and quiet, head out to the garden, which has stunning views of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables. Filtered water is available throughout the hostel, while free tea and coffee is provided in the mornings. There is a TV room with a video library and book exchange, but only beanbags to sit on.

Summary

The best things about Deco are the views from the garden and the free wireless internet. The hostel manager and staff are generally helpful, but you may encounter some brashness or bad language. Overall, it is difficult for us to recommend Deco Backpackers, but if other places are full or you are looking for free wireless internet, it is an adequate place to stay for a few days.

1 Professional opinion -- don't you dare go to Deco's!
I'm a tourism graduate, working with hospitality for five years, and I must tell ya -- don't ever plan to stay at this hostel. After three days I saw the manager with bad manners with an English couple. So, on my seventh of ten days, I arrived and there were no blankets for me. I tried to sleep without it, but I couldn't, even wearing gloves. On the other day I had to listen lot's of bad words (*uck, *hit) from the "manager," complaining because I took another bed's blanket. He forgot about me because it was the someone else's bed (he left two days before). I still had three more nights, but he said I owed him money because he made a special week price for me and told he would call the cops if I didn't get out of there. I'm mature and professional enough to know this person is in the wrong business. That was, undoubtedly, the worst hospitality experience I've ever had in my life.

1 Stayed here with my boyfriend for two nights in the first week of April. The guy on reception seemed friendly but a bit of a chancer. We paid him and gave him $10 for a key deposit. Then he gave us our key and told us the directions to our "hut" that we were staying in. And a hut it was. It was outside with a couple of steps up to it. It was similar to a caravan except smaller. The room was dusty and the carpets were filthy. We stayed here two nights and were glad to get out of it. We left at 7 a.m. the morning of our departure and there was no one on reception. There's a box there for "Early Birds" to leave our keys in. We left it in and I emailed the owner later that day and asked him could he refund my credit card with our key deposit as nobody was there to give it us when we left. No reply and I emailed again a week later and the same thing. A word of warning -- the only good thing about this hostel is the view from out the back. That's it.

3 This hostel is located just outside the main area of Queenstown, but is within easy walking distance. Its well worth the walk as the view from the hostel is outstanding, right over the lake and mountains, and its quiet too. The hostel is made up of 3 seperate buildings, which was a bit strange at first. The kitchen and lounge are in a building next to the car park. The next building has the reception area, and some rooms. You then have to walk outside to the showers and toilets, and some more rooms. Personally, I found this ok as it is all so close but I know it bothered some other guests. The rooms are basic but clean. The toilets and showers are plentiful but the area could definitely be a lot cleaner. The showers go straight onto the floor (there is no seperate cubicles for them) and the drainage is not good enough so before long the floor is soaking. Apparently the men's smells a bit too! The lounge is more functional than anything else. It is not decided for lounging in! The kitchen is large, but is missing things like bowls for cereal, and glasses. It is also the only hostel I have ever been to where guests do not clean up after themselves. It was filthy at times, and we ate out a couple of times rather than having to cook there! From Wanaka, the hostel is easy to find. Continue up Stanley Street, take a left onto Shotover, and a right onto Camp St. Then take a left onto Man Street and the hostel is on the left hand side. Overall, this is an adequate hostel. The view (which you can enjoy from a small garden) really is fantastic, so if this is important to you, then the other things can be overlooked. And you can't blame the hostel for messy guests!

4 I stayed here about a year ago when reforms were on. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and I would highly recommend a good stay here. If I remember rightly, there are two ways to get to the hostel and one is a nasty hill, which should be avoided
