Description
The Wet Hippo Backpackers is situated in Central Port Elizabeth. We are within walking distance to most of the historical sites, shops, restaurants, nightlife and parks. Being in a lovely old house, we have a nice homely atmosphere with a sundeck out front, a swimming pool in the back and an indoor fireplace as well as a bonfire pit in the back garden. We offer many activities such as sandboarding trips, scuba diving courses and charters, horse riding, sea-kayaking, hiking trips, surfing school and trips, car hire, game parks and township tours.We also have mountain bikes available for hire to go exploring on your own.
We offer a free pick up and drop off. Free continental breakfast, with tea and coffee available throughout the day.
There are laundry facilities, internet access, DSTV, a DVD player and a pool table.
Our friendly staff are very experienced in the backpacker industry, with 2 being scuba divemasters, 1 an instructor and 1 is a sandboard instructor. They are well informed on activities in and around Port Elizabeth and are always happy to help you with planning your travels.

Turn off on the "Russel Road" off ramp, go past 2 sets of traffic lights & at the 3rd turn right into "Westbourne Road" (Russel Road College will be on your right). my friend Magda and I stayed for two weeks at the Wet Hippo almost a year ago, and I still think of it every single day, it was the most amazing experience and truly life changing. Matthew looked after us like we were Royalty. we still talk about our holiday and will always do so. Magda and I have agreed to meet in London to celebrate the first anniversary of our holiday of a lifetime. Thank you heaps and heaps to Matthew and Carla for looking after us and for making us feel so special during our stay. If I know anyone is going backpacking in S.A. I always suggest going to the Wet Hippo, it was most surely the best and warmest welcome on the planet. — Maggie Whitwham (2007-02-15) Fantastic hostel and staff. The facilities are good, and washing is done for you. Very clean and honest hostel. Fellow guests are great, and there's a really good atmosphere. It has good and easy access to the main city and good taxi services. There's a great back garden and swimming pool. It's about a 5-minute drive from the beach and good local facilities. — Lep (2005-09-06) Great place. The staff and fellow guests were friendly and the facilities were excellent. You can get your washing done here (service wash) for little more than doing it yourself using their machine. Breakfast is available and there is a large and sunny back garden with a good-sized swimming pool. The only downside was that there was no lock on one of the bathroom doors.
