Caterina Private Rooms & Apartments

Hostelz.com's Review

This hostel is the home of the owner Joe (actually Josefov) and his family. It is centrally located close to Oktogon square. The nearest Metro is Oktogon at about 50m away, and there's a tram stop close by too. The building is fairly hard to find but you should have no problems following the numbers on the main street (Terez Korut). The even numbers are on one side and the odd numbers on the opposite. There is an art cinema with weird décor around the entrance to number 30. Look carefully for the button on the panel and ask to be let in.

Don't be fooled by the decrepit state of the stairway/building on the way to the fourth (top) floor. Once past the gate inside the hostel proper, Joe's place resembles an IKEA showroom. It's a very well-furnished 5-room apartment with the three rooms facing the main street serving as 6-bed dorms. The "staff" consists of Joe and his wife Caterina (and two kids). Joe is casual and friendly. Caterina is quite helpful but didn't seem as friendly or approachable.

The beds are on solid pine double deckers and are quite comfortable. A desk and chair make up the common area in the room. There is a single cupboard with a TV, but there are no lockers. The small kitchen looks good but is only available from 2pm to 7pm. There is no curfew but the rooms are closed for cleaning from 10am to 1pm. The toilets/baths are luxurious and come with with fancy light fixtures, beautiful tiles and a bathtub.

Don't expect a party. It can be a little dull here and there isn't really much of an atmosphere (this is a family home after all). It feels a little cold too, perhaps because it's so clean and there is no common area outside the rooms.

Internet access is via Joe's computer for around 100 florints for 15 minutes. Laundry is about the same price. The simple (skimpy is the word) breakfast is served in individual portions.

Overall, this is a clean, comfortable, and well-located place to stay.

Helpful staff, Cheap
At the price of EUR 8 per person this hostel is one of the cheapest i've been to. Location is also good, close to mayor train stations and center. Peter (staff) was helpful and positive. Present state of hostel doesn't match the pictures above. I don't know what happened here, but beds are old, linen is totally worn out to extent that my girlfriend chose to sleep in her sleeping bag. Kitchen is well equipped, bathrooms were perfectly clean. Free breakfast is basic (jam, margarine, tea/coffee). WiFi was working occasionally. If you are looking for cheap place to stay in, i would definitely recommend this hostel.

Great tips and good experience!
We spent the weekend in Budapest to reunite with some friends and had a great experience with this Hostel! Caterina gave us some really good tips about the city! We did almost everything she recommended and had a great time in Budapest. We had a whole apartment for ourselves with a double bed, 2mins walk from the Hostel but not inconvenient at all. The hostel is also well located, very close to one metro station, so I definitely recommend this Hostel!

If you intent to stay at the five-persons appartment be aware that it is not very close from the hostel so not so close to center has one might think. Besides that the bed linen in the appartment was not very clean and the beds are not good. The cleaness aspect is not worth to mention because it is like never happened there before we arrive!
Good points about this hostel: Friendly and knowledgeable owner (Joe), central location, clean beds and bathrooms, quiet clientele and great showers. Weaknesses: You have to climb 3 floors of stairs (no elevator), mattresses are getting thin, some street noise, limited usage of the kitchen (only open from 2 p.m. till 8 p.m.), lockout from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m., and very simple breakfast (bread, jam and coffee). One word of caution: My friend and I requested a double room, and Joe offered to put us in an apartment for 2 nights, with the rest of the stay in his hostel. We found out (after climbing 3 floors of stairs with our super heavy backpacks) that his apartment is a 15-minute walk from the hostel. The apartment is located on some side streets, and it's quite dark (and a little bit scary) at night. So if you worry about security, don't stay in the apartment.
The owner (Joe) is the coolest man alive. Though it's impossible to know what he's thinking about he will take a bullet for you if necessary. No joke. He woke up at three in the morning to make sure we made our flight. All-around best dude ever.
We have been to the Caterina Hostel five times and don't plan on ever staying in any other hostel while in Budapest. Joe is awesome, the hostel is super clean, and Caterina is not a bitch at all, if you're nice to her!! I can only recommend this place highly to anyone staying in Budapest.
This is the cleanest place you will find, but not the most fun!!! There is no common room and the kitchen is tiny and cannot be used after 7, which is ridiculous. Caterina actually makes you feel bad. You are gonna be staying with a family, in their house, and she seems to hate us guests for that. Joe (bless him!) is very kind, but I don't think I'd stay there again.
No need to mention again, as others already have, that the place is extremely clean and nice. Plus it is in the very center of Budapest, a five-minute walk from the Nyugaty railway station. I would also say that Jo is a very kind person. He made us feel at home and he is simply great. My friends and I had some problems with bookings and other hosteling issues and he helped us so much! Thanks, Jo, we are waiting for you in Italy!
