The Hostelz.com Review
If you're looking for a friendly place to chill-out for a while then Hekerua Lodge is the perfect place. Situated just about 15 minutes walk from Oneroa village, it is well signposted from the main road yet peacefully hidden away in the bush. It is easily accessible by bus from the ferry or any of the larger villages on the island - both buses no. 1 and 2. stop within a 5 minute walk.

The hostel has a very friendly atmosphere about it - everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves and showed respect for cleaning up after themselves and keeping noise to a reasonable level. The place was spotless and facilities are good - a well-equipped kitchen, lounge area with TV, video (and a huge selection of videos to choose from), sofas and magazines, a washing machine and adequate shower, and toilet facilities. There is also a small swimming pool and spa.

There is plenty to do nearby - Little Oneroa beach is just a short walk away and access to other beaches is easy. A shop can be found at the beach to buy provisions for self-catering, or if eating out seems preferable, there is a great pub in the village of Surfdale - a 20 minute walk.

Absolutely disgusting. I can understand the need to save water because of a shortage on the island but that shouldn't mean that the linen is dirty or that the kitchen and bathroom are unclean -- it's a bit of a joke that you have to remove your shoes before entering! The rule about no noise after 10 p.m. obviously didn't apply to the owners, who played loud music into the early hours. Would really recommend that people stay elsewhere.

This place is revolting! The rooms, bathrooms, pool, and kitchen were all very dirty. Nice place to stay if like noise all night and don't mind sharing your room with the cockroaches. Such a shame because it is in a very nice quiet bush location within close walking distance to the beach.

I recommend it! It IS a bit far out of town but its location in the bush is nice and it is near a beach. Too bad it rained the whole time I was there as well. But the dorms were nice enough to be cooped up in, the pool looked inviting despite the rain, and the terrace was a great place to soak up the sun the last day we were there. The staff are nice, the kitchen is clean and it has a sociable common area. Aside from the weather, it was great. I'll go back one day — when it's sunny!
