The Hostelz.com Review
You definitely feel like you are staying in the great outdoors of Australia here at HI - Lorne - Great Ocean Rd Backpackers YHA Hostel.

Location

Great Ocean Rd Backpackers in Lorne, VIC, is set just off the main road, with cabins tucked in throughout the wilderness. It's close to the center of town, and with a grocery store right across the street -- you can’t go wrong at this place. Parking is free and located conveniently close to the rooms.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Rooms include singles, doubles, dorm, and family apartment. Some of the rooms are in lofts, which require a ladder to reach -- so be sure to specify your needs before you reserve your room. Bathrooms are also located in the main cabin, with decent facilities. There are only two showers, which we can imagine could get busy during peak summer months. Overall, it's clean and accessible.

Common Spaces

The main lodge is located in the center of the cottage complex and features a full kitchen, common room with TV, computers, and a great outdoor patio (if the weather permits). Kitchen is medium size, and could fit eight at a time comfortably inside. Free tea and coffee in the kitchen is always a nice touch. There is a BBQ on the patio as well that guests can use during their stay. There are also free laundry facilities here, but you need to bring your own detergent, so a great place to get caught up on some clean clothes if need be. Paid internet is in the main area, and there is free Wi-Fi for those with their own laptops. Common room is the only lacking part of this hostel -- just a small room with a couch and TV.

Summary

The charm of this hostel is its location -- set in the woods you will be surrounded by birds of all colours, ducks and if you’re lucky maybe even a kangaroo! We spent the morning feeding some ducks and taking pictures of the birds that landed on the various balconies. Overall, we would definitely recommend this hostel to other backpackers. Make sure you have a YHA membership card (which can be purchased at the hostel if you don’t), to save on each room you book.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
1  Awful place. The worst place I have stayed in in five continents. The owner of this Hostel trades on the good name of the YHA and diminishes it by his actions and manner. It is noisy and dirty with inadequate loos and kitchen facilities. The room for two we had was above a dorm and the construction was so poor every time somebody in bed below us turned over the building shook. The people in the dorm were also very drunk -- as they admitted -- and at least one of them vomited outside our door. We complained to the owner, called Paki, but his comments were, "Well, if you want to backpack". He was much more interested in telling us that the place was full the night after we were due to leave. Another guest had stayed there in the past under different owners who were kindly and kept the place clean and well managed. She was very disappointed. This Hostel was awful.  , English ()
5  Great wee hostel stayed here in 1993 whilst touring australia. loved it so much and its good to hear that its still so popular. this wee backpackers was one of the highlights of my entire trip. fab!  , scotland ()
5  Awesome Great hostel; you live in small, modern shacks with balconies and outside eating/BBQ areas. Very social, great staff.  , Germany ()
4  We stayed (April 2006) in a family room in the loft, and access was by very steep stairs that were virtually a ladder. Not recommended for the infirm or for anyone with young children. Similarly, access from your car to your room requires a fair walk. We were provided with the family room upgrade at no additional fee. Outside of the ladder access, everything else is excellent, with the cabins dotted about a attractive bushland setting. It could really be improved with an additional common room of some kind -- the one provided is quite small and dominated by cooking, eating, and a TV, but this is a fairly minor complaint. During the summer, sitting outside would be fine. Otherwise, and excellent place -- very clean, good bathrooms, and friendly helpful staff. Cool people were there -- generally older. Not in the centre of Lorne, but not that far (10 minutes walk). Recommended.  ()
5  This is one of the best hostels I have stayed in since leaving home nine months ago. Fabulously friendly staff and a gorgeous hostel set on a wooded hill. The dorms are like little individual log cabins. Well equipped, modern, clean kitchen and free use of washing machine and dryer (unheard of!). Wish I'd been able to stay longer than one night. Would love to go back.  ()
4  Stayed Sept 2005, winter time. Lovely spot, beautiful beach, and fabulous views. YHA was really friendly, and comfortable.  ()
4  In '94 I stayed here, and I liked it very much. I fondly recall the place getting a little full and nearly stepping in someone's face who was sacked out on the floor when I climbed out of my bunk.  ()
