The Hostelz.com Review
Bib's International Backpackers is an excellent hostel in prime African location. It is a hostel that caters for everyone and everything. Upon arrival, rather than get a quick tour of the hostel and then let loose with an ad map, they give you a guided tour in the hostel vehicle. The tour takes about half an hour and you get to see hippos, crocs, and the Indian Ocean. The staff are very knowledgable about the surrounding area and give you warnings about where to be at night -- hippos wander the streets after dark.
Each day the hostel runs free events such as guided walks, braais (BBQ), beach shuttle runs, and evening beach parties. As well as these, there are tours to the various national parks, wetlands, and Zulu villages. They are reasonably priced as well.
The hostel is large but has a very homey feel to it. The rooms are basic but very comfortable and are cleaned daily. There is a large kitchen where you can prepare your own meals. They also offer free tea and coffee. There is a communal area next to the kitchen as well. In the hostel there is a pool, table tennis table, pool table, and bar. The hostel also supplies an adequate amount of computers for internet access at reasonable rates. In the evening they light the braai so you can have your steaks after a hard day's work watching the wildlife.
The hostel is situated at the end of the main street (it is very quiet though) and is in prime location near to the estuary mouth where you can get a boat to go for a closer look at the hippos. St. Lucia is an undiscovered part of Africa and is relaxed. Discover it before it becomes commercialised. Bib's is the place to do it.

Not my favorite ... Visited in March 2012. The main problem with Bibs was the cleanliness. The rooms, kitchen, and bathrooms all left a lot to be desired. My room smelled moldy and was unpleasantly dark and dank, the shower drains were clogged, and the fridge in the kitchen looked like it hadn't been cleaned or cleaned out in months. The staff was neither friendly nor helpful and didn't seem to care about their jobs. They was frequently no one at the front desk when we wanted to ask a question or use the internet. The bar/barbecue area did look pretty fun, but there weren't enough people in the hostel for that part to shine. — Brandon , USA (2012-04-29)
I give them one star because there is no worst option Never again. Totally dirty, even the rooms and the kitchen. The staff were very unpleasant. Apart from that the village is neither really interesting. Even if the surroundings are lovely, Santa Lucia is too touristic and it has lost its charm. — Mar , Spanish (2009-07-06)
Cleanliness leaves lot to desire! Although great freebies and backpackers atmosphere, cleanliness and friendliness of the staff at the reception leaves a lot to be desired. In the dorm where I stayed they made up the bed without changing the sheets and there's an intrusive smell all over the place. — Astrid , Netherlands (2008-01-04)

Lots of freebies and great atmosphere. Friendly staff and lots of hippos even in the garden next door. — Marie (2005-12-22)

Excellent place to stay right on the main street. It has all facilities needed and a couple of extra thrown in. Tours are well organized and cheaply priced. Great staff, great times. Watch out for passing hippos. — Chris (2005-09-07)

Really friendly staff and plenty of freebies. Free morning walks, free night drives, free Zulu dinner, and free this and that. I promise I'll go back. — Marie (2005-08-29)

I visited in February 2005. This was the highlight of my time in South Africa!! It's situated in a great spot with everything within distance. It provides excellent free activities and others at fantastic rates! The staff are all wonderful, especially the guide Sandella. This man is a LEGEND!!! All in all you have to visit St. Lucia when in South Africa, and this is the only place to stay when you are there. — Nab (2005-04-22)

Fantastic — just what you want in a backpackers. They have all the facilities and a premium location. The staff go beyond your expectations and are keen to show you the area for free — good guys. Fast Internet, too. — Johnny Boy (2005-03-30)

This place has a very friendly staff. Watch out for races on the beach, though! They can be dangerous! Ha ha. I ended up in a private hospital in Pretoria! Ouch! — Amanda (2005-01-07)
