The Hostelz.com Review
Cairns Central McLeod Street YHA is a very nice hostel, just opposite to Cairns central shopping center and transportation center, and withing walking distance to the city center and the esplanade. If you have your own car, there is a free parking just beside the hostel for up to three hours (after 5 p.m., it's all free). You can also park your car inside the hostel for a fee. If you are spending the whole day at the reef, you can park you car for free at the parking lot of the nearby shopping center -- there is plenty of space.

The hostel is located on McLeod Street -- going east to west, just one street from Sheridan Street. And it's right next to the Cairns central shopping center. You can't miss it.

This hostel has a very helpful reception open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. In the middle of the hostel is a nice-looking pool, surrounded by a brick floor. The whole building is in good shape and is very clean. The kitchen is good, with plenty of storage space, and a lot of sitting places. The toilets and showers are comfortably located on the first and second floors.

The rooms themselves aren't too much of a big deal. Most of the rooms are six beds-per-room with personal lockers in all of them. There is also expansive internet access, laundry facilities, and a big notice board.

Lovely -- clean and tidy, central location
This is a great YHA hostel, just over the road from Cairns Central. Best of all it is quiet with real travelers passing through. Set around a central courtyard, there is a great pool with a jacuzzi, a large (and very clean) kitchen at the far end, and some (very expensive!) internet computers ($8 an hour!). The Global Gossip cafe down the road is half the price. Rooms are ok, if spartan, but at least all come with air con. The place is open until 11p.m. -- after that point you need you card to get in through the front door (and there aren't any staff around if it doesn't work). My only real complaint is that the reception staff were pretty unhelpful both in booking tours (they read the brochure in front of me, and then told me what it said, rather than going on their own experience!) and in sorting out the problems I had with my door card, which continually failed.

Best place to stay in Cairns!
I and my family stayed here four nights during our seven-week odyssey Down Under late Spring and Summer 2006. We found the location, computers, kitchen, cleanliness, safety, and overall quality of this hostel superb. The reception was especially helpful in arranging tours, especially with Kakadu Dreams out of Darwin (our next major stop). I was only disappointed in that we didn't have enough time (and four days, it quite a bit!) to really explore the area more. We did achieve the single event I wanted, which was exploring the Great Barrier Reef, still a ninety-minute boat ride out. We went with Reef Magic and Beat was our divemaster, an equally superb experience I recommend to anyone. We were able to get a bonus, which was taking the Skyrail over the rainforest to Karunda, and the train back.

Nice, clean, comfy hostel. Welcoming and efficient staff. What you'd expect from a YHA. Good location, five to ten minutes from lagoon and esplanade. Two minutes from bars, restaurants. Good swimming pool, pool table. Got internet access but it's expensive -- there's cheaper places just round the corner.

The accommodation itself is pretty good. However, the 4x4s used for the trips on to fraser island are very old and some dont even have a working four wheel drive gears! This isnt the most useful situation when it is imperative for use on the island. Good location even though the town is pretty small.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was laid-back, and the crowd was nice. Everything -- the room, the bathroom, and the kitchen -- was kept really clean.

The staff were so helpful and friendly. I had an unreal time. They knew so much about diving, and I ended up doing my course with Pro Dive, which was amazing. The hostel is clean, and the TV room is excellent, as well as the pool. This is the best hostel I have ever stayed in!!
