The dorm room is downstairs in a kind of basement with soft lighting and 9 single beds in a large room. You have to go upstairs to the bathroom but it's not inconvenient. And the showers have hot water which you really need in Luang Prabang -- it can get cold. They also give you a towel and blanket and you will need the latter at night. As a whole it was pretty clean and hygienic.
There were two other guys staying here, a Japanese man and an American who were both pretty friendly. Luang Prabang is so small that you keep bumping into each other everywhere. So we would sometimes meet in the street, get a drink, maybe see a temple together and then go our separate ways again.
Viradessa has a TV and it was nice to sit and watch with the family or other guests at night but the night market was so much fun that you'll probably rarely spend much of the evening inside.
Viradessa is on a side street off the main road but the town is so small you're really never far from anywhere. If you want the market, travel agents and internet shops these are only a few minutes walk.
Apparently they offer discounts in off season (April-November) and for long term stays so it's probably worth asking when you arrive. The dorm is only USD $1 in off season and USD $2 in peak season.
They don't take reservations in advance so turn up early in the day to get a spot. Unfortunately, most of the transport from Thailand and other parts of Laos does not arrive until the afternoon. The two day boat from Thailand arrives about 5 pm, the buses from Vang Vieng and Vientianne mid afternoon. So if you arrive late in the day you can always move the next morning. Most people spend at least three or four nights in Luang Prabang.
