The Hostelz.com Review
The owners of this guesthouse are Thai and Japanese, so understandably there are a lot of Japanese tourists who come here, however there are just as many Europeans, Americans and Australians and for good reason. The staff are renowned for there friendliness and are more than willing to help with anything asked of them. The Banana guesthouses multi-national residents allows a very relaxed and open-minded atmosphere and is a great place to meet other travellers.

The guesthouse can become full in peak season (December-March) as they sometimes take reservations in advance. Try contacting them a few days in advance if your desperate to stay as it is well worth it. However, rooms do not empty until midday so if you plan to just turn up don't do it too early.

Its easy to see the attaction to staying here. There's a community, family feel with the owners children and friends often around and you only have to look at the walls to see the postcards and positive feedback from travellers who have come and gone. There is also always someone to help out which is very convienient!

There is a great selection of books and newspapers and the cafe/restaurant serves until 9pm and unlike many other guesthouses who concentrate mainly on the accomondation aspect, trekking etc. the food is very good. A T.V with cable channels and assistance with air, bus and train tickets, as well as massage, Thai cooking courses and laudry seperate Banana from other guesthouses. The treks at Banana are definately up to other guesthouses standards, they offer a wide selection and in addition to the standard treks, which vary from day trips to 2 nights/ 3 days tours, Banana Guesthouse also offers private tours especially tailored to their customers' needs. They can arrange trekking tours to anywhere in northern Thailand.

There are two mixed dorm rooms with 8 beds in each (4 bunks). The rooms are fairly small but there is access to a balcony. This is a popular spot for people to relax, chat and read books. The dorm is upstairs away from the restaurant.

The main selling point of Banana is the "The Banana Project". The owner of Banana decided to construct a school for the young Karen village people. The school is a community center which is being funded by the Banana Guesthouse and it's visitors. The school needs more money so it can attract the young people in the villages and educate them, so they can be independent in society and make decisions for themselves. The school is in a village that is used as a trekking base in the hills near Chiang Mai. If you have any old clothes or would like to make a donation it would be greatly appreciated, donations can be made even if you are not staying at the guesthouse.

Overall, the Banana Guesthouse is one of the best in Chiang Mai and along with the Banana project and the friendly staff and atmosphere, along with the affordable prices and trekking options it is a must for travellers going to Chiang Mai!

The Banana guest house is ok. The female dorm would be a bit cramped if the dorm was full, and is a bit dirty. The attached bathroom is convenient, but also slightly dirty with a temperamental draining system and rare toilet paper sightings. The downstairs area and outside areas are not well lit, so it isn't a good place to hang out at night. However, the staff was really nice and helpful and friendly, so there you go.

I emailed them twice to confirm that we had a room with a hot shower and never heard back. Finally I called them from Bangkok to find out that they had not booked us in a hot shower room, despite that we had booked months in advance. They said they would pick us up at the train station the morning we got in, which they did not. When we took a Tuk Tuk to the place, the Thai owner said that his Japanese wife had emailed us back -- excuse? lie? At any rate, I wanted a shower after our train ride so I went into the communal bathroom to use a hot shower and only cold water came out. We took our bags and found another hotel.

I visited Banana Guesthouse in march 2005 and enjoyed my stay very much!! The hotel is nice and simple, the rooms are clean and VERY cheep!! The staff is friendly and I went to a very nice trekking tour, organized by the hotel. The 3 stars is for the standard of the hotel. The hotel staff and the trekking will get 5 stars!! Thank you very much, I will come back!!

I literally just left the Banana and am currently at an Internet cafe trying to find an "adequate" place to stay. Sure, maybe I only paid $1.80 for the night, but I learned my lesson. There weren't any people to meet there — nobody was staying there. The dorm room faces the noisiest street you've ever heard, and it continues all night long. The sheets look unclean, and the shower only pumps out freezing cold water for about 30 seconds, and then you have to wait a bit before it'll do it again. Last night I could hear the rats squeaking above my head, and I don't even know why they have a sink in the bathroom — it doesn't connect to anything and all the water immediately drains from the sink onto the floor anyhow. I've stayed in many a hostel in my day, and though the people who run the place were very nice I would never stay here again.

I had so much fun staying here with my friends that I've advised every single person I meet to go here, too. They were the most friendly, entertaining, welcoming, and sweet people I've ever had the pleasure to meet in a hostel, and they were brilliant!

I loved staying here. I stayed here by myself as a single female traveller in '96. The staff was helpful and really entertaining. You used to be able to draw all over the walls in the restaurant, too?? I am definitely going back.
