Sabaidy Guesthouse does not get very good reviews in guidebooks – something about it not being very clean. The reception and rooms were fine, if a little small. But once you started to go up to the rooms the families' stuff seemed to be everywhere (and a lot of it appeared to be rubbish), and the bathrooms were grimy. The water was hot but you never felt too comfortable going into them.
The owner and his son at reception seemed a little apathetic and answered all questions in monosyllables. It was not clear if they were just unfriendly, not confident with English or had no personalities whatsoever. But it does not take much effort to keep a bathroom clean. What they really need is another bathroom as all the rooms seem to use the same two bathrooms.
The dorm rooms here are the cheapest in town so you probably pay for what you get. They seemed relatively clean but there was little space between the 10 bunk beds. Apparently there is another dorm room with just four beds which would be preferable even if the space between the beds is the same.
Sabaidy was not all bad and there were a few things going for it. While the father and son were a little untalkative they had a family and friend entourage in the café and TV area who were nice. And fortunately they did not overrun the place. The common area was still very much for travellers and there was almost always another traveller sitting here reading, eating or watching TV. Even if the local kids were watching TV it was usually an English cartoon or kids movie that everyone could watch. Also it's right on the main street snuggled between two internet cafes so there's no excuse for not writing home.
