The Hostelz.com Review
The Treehouse is a big house (you guessed it--made of wood), built right in the middle of the rainforest of Mission Beach. In fact, it's located a couple of kilometers north of the centre of the town. There is a bus going several times a day to and from the hostel to the town, but in the evening you'd better have something of your own to do since there is nothing going on here. This place has a great atmoshpere, and even just the rainforest itself makes it worth staying here.

The Treehouse has two floors. The toilet and showers are located on the first floor. The kitchen and the common area are on the second floor. There is also a big pool and a huge backyard, where you can walk and be impressed by the surrounding rainforest (just beware of the snakes).

The building itself is quite old. The kitchen is outstanding, and well equipped. There is a nice library, in case you find yourself bored. There is also a ping-pong table downstairs (next to the laundry), and no TV -- intentionally.

5  Great the treehouse is excellent. a real place to travel to. no tv, just music and talking. if you want to travel, go. if you are a moaner and dont like a bit of adventure, then stay at home, harry and mandy do a great job. will visit again.  , england ()
5  Wonderful I agree with several others -- best place on earth! I stayed for four days in August 1994. I found all the people friendly, the reception staff helpful in planning excursions, the surrounding rain forest sounds unforgettable, and the informal layout comfortable and conducive to conversations. I always have ear plugs with me so sleeping was no problem even if there were late night drumming. I spent each day exploring places I had never been -- hiking to the breathtaking view at the top of Dunk Island; renting a bike for a few dollars and going along the empty beach; snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef; hiking into the lowland rain forest with a generous guide who then worked at Treehouse, Wayne Cousemaker, who helped me meet my first Cassowary (fresh from an eight-week ecology course in the Atherton Tableland rain forest but never having seen one). I was so sad when Wayne died of cancer. Nothing I did or experienced while staying at Treehouse was anything but among the very best days of my life. That summer I tried to choose to have no set expectations as I traveled and I was more than happy with the Treehouse experience.  , USA ()
5  Unbelievable Ah, the memories.  ()
5  Cozy, friendly, and chilled out This was a lovely little hostel, i loved the friendly, homey atmosphere and the owners were very helpful and welcoming. They rescued us after we got turned away from another place by the wicked witch of mission beach! Harry is a dude.  , England ()
5  This is what a hostel should be about -- no TV, beautiful music, amazing views, deep in the jungle, a twenty-four-hour pool, a beach close by, and whitewater rafting around the corner. The no TV is important. It means you can meet people and chat to them -- and there are people from all over the world here -- swing around in a hammock and read a book or chat till late. This hostel stood out for me on my trip up to the Daintree -- a place people could relax from the partying at Airlie and Cairns. I came back again the year after and stayed longer. It's just a beautiful place. I met up with some amazing Germans and we met up again when I went to Germany for the World Cup the year after.  , Australia ()
5  Sh*t some of the stuff that I have been reading, some of these people I think need to stay at home or stay in a hotel because what do you come to the tropics for? It's the rainforest what do you expect! I have been here on and off for years and I still reckon it is the best place on earth. The new owner Harry the grumpy old sod is not too bad, for an old fella, just get to know him a little.  ()
5  I arrived there with Andy and Fran in the summer of 2000 and Clare Bear took one look at me and knew I was going to stay longer than the two nights I had book in for. she was right, I left two and a half months later. I loved the Treehouse, and working there. I think about that place all the time and want to return to it someday. It is such a magical place, you can't even describe it to someone, they have to experience it on their own. If you are even on the east coast in Oz, make sure you stop in for a few nights, I promise you won't regret it!  ()
5  The Treehouse, with its forests and beaches, is without fail the most amazing place that I stayed in during my journey around Oz! I had had a hard time before I arrived but soon I had settled in, I was earning my keep and had met so many amazing people. Dennis the manager was warm and welcoming to everyone and the others, lilly, uli, goetz, Jasper and Dee, brilliant! We were all infused with the life teeming in the forest and the light of the fires at night. I know things must change but the spirit will always live on in those who have been! Go!  ()
5  Two days in 2004 ended up being two weeks. i couldnt leave, untill money ran out. One of the best environments i have stayed in, wildlife, chilled atmosphere, friendly staff, and people there, no tv, its a haven for all. Thoroughly enjoyed it and you should too.  ()
5  I was working in the treehouse hostel for six weeks. with wonderful people in this beautiful area. I love and miss mission beach, and I will come back. working in paradise!  ()
5  it's been six years since i've stayed and worked at the treehouse but it still remains the place that i recall on the most when i need to step back and just remember the crazy reasons that we all travel. we played drums until the early morning with everyone that stayed there and everynight we made new friends and danced. it takes a few days to adjust to the flow of the place but once you are settled, you never want to leave. i know that a few of the people that were there when i was have been back and a few might still be there but i know that my time will come again and i hope that the new experiences and people will be as unique as the past.  ()
2  This was the worst hostel I stayed at whilst in Oz. Really overrated. The staff are rude and unhelpful, there is nothing to do and the rooms are basic and dirty. I thought the place would be ideal to chill out, however, the rooms back onto the lounge area - where music is played loud right through the night. Was not impressed.  ()
5  So great to find this site and remember what a great place and time the tree house was and hopefully still is for so many. Made me want to pack up my ruc sac and get moving. Instead i'm working in Boston and it's f***ing freezing. Still i suppose i could be mucking out Sooty and getting bitten to death by the mozzies....  ()
5  I stayed in Treehouse for 3 nights, first I just wanted to take a stop over but then I realized that this was the BEST PLACE ON EARTH! I just had to stay longer. I miss Mission Beach and Treehouse soooo much! Should have stayed longer.  ()
5  I lived and worked at the Treehouse back in April 1992. Like most people I booked in for two days and ended up staying for weeks! I recently heard the news about Chez and was deeply saddened. She was an incredible lady. I celebrated my 27th birthday there and she went to the trouble of baking me a cake! The place used to be spotless with fresh flowers everywhere and an atmosphere that made the Treehouse totally unique. I have plenty of treasured memories of Sooty, Waldo, Gina, Jasper and Bunny, and met some nice people like Debs, Nick, Mark, and Marco.  ()
