Dated with poor facilities, but ok This is a converted motel, that offers moderately ok private rooms -- but woeful dorms. The big problem is that the dorms are just made out of the same sized rooms -- with eight beds in them. In the block with the dorms (one male, one female), there are just two showers, one toilet, and one basin -- so that's one basin, and one mirror, for sixteen people. It's the only hostel I've ever stayed in where people get ready to go out from about 4 p.m. onwards, just to ensure they get a shower/space in the queue for the mirror. Madness. The communal area is actually pretty good, with a telly, nice kitchen, and lots of fridge space. There is also one very expensive internet kiosk. All the communal areas close at 10:30 p.m. sharp, and then if you want to carry on chatting you are "invited" to go and sit on the grass over the road from the hostel. Nice. — lorks , UK (2007-12-02)

A lovely hostel run by a really friendly and helpful couple. It's a fifteen-minute walk out of town but it's good value and clean, and has a pool, spa room, and barbeque area and you can hire bikes cheaply. We had a self contained unit which had a small bathroom but a well equipped kitchen and a TV. it was clean and comfortable. The wine tour which is offered is fantastic value -- we had a really good day and I can highly recommend it. We were sorry to leave this hostel. — Rachboc (2007-02-02)

This hostel is ok -- a bit drab, very dull, and definitely lacking on the social side of things. I got the impression that the management didn't want the hassle of cleaning another bathroom, consequently uncomfortable for all eleven people left sharing the one toilet and shower. The walls between dorms are paper thin and the dorms themselves don't have room to swing a rucksack, let alone a cat. So don't expect a restful night's sleep. Saying that, the staff were approachable, despite my late night arrival. — Rachel Clements (2006-08-29)

This hostel seems to be a converted American-style motel, as most of the rooms are in little chalet-type buildings set around the edge of a courtyard. Some of the decor doesn't seem to have been updated since then either, and stepping into the Riviera Backpackers is akin to stepping into a time machine to the 1970s! Having said that, everything seemed to work and the place was clean. The communal area is one large room, with adeqaute cooking and seating facilities providing there aren't too many people staying. Each little chalet seemed to have its own bathroom area, which again is adequate unless the place is full, in which case you may have to wait a while.
The town of Lakes Entrance itself doesn't have a 'centre' as such as it is long and thin, spread out along the beach, but the hostel is within walking distance of restaurants/shops etc and tour operators offering various different boat trips. The hostel has free off-street parking. Overall, not on a par with some hostels in more popular locations with more competition, but still a perfectly fine place to stay for a few days whilst seeing the area. — Chris (2006-01-12)
