The Hostelz.com Review
Mission Beach Resort is not a pure hostel, in the sense that it is a 4-star accommodation that also happens to offer dormatory-style rooms at backpacker prices ($19 per night). The ensuite rooms are beautiful and are equipped with a covered garage, air conditioning, a mini-fridge, a small television, and a patio. The pool is very scenic and there are lounge chairs and patio tables abound. A clean common use kitchen is available for use, with microwaves, toasters, eight burners and a large refridgerator.

Nightlife takes place at the resort's bar, where pool tables can be found and reasonably priced food can be ordered. The steady stream of backpackers travelling on tourist buses ensure that a young social atmosphere is maintained, although the bar area tends to fill up with an older crowd of guests who are staying in the non-dormatory rooms. There is also a full service restaurant attached to the resort that offers an extravagant all-you-can-eat buffet. Travellers on the Oz Experience can score this buffet at a discounted price of $13.

The beach is a five minute walk away, and during stinger season a bus runs to North Mission Beach where there are stinger nets ($6 round trip). A bottle shop, grocery store, and news agent are all located directly beside the resort. Overall, this is likely the most luxurious "hostel" that you may find in your travels. Highly recommended.

We stayed here as part of a package deal with our sky dive and white water rafting and didn't know anything about the place. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised with the pool outside our room, and the location close to Mission Beach's small parade of shops and bus stop. Our room was reasonable -- if not a bit tired, and the place seemed reasonably clean. However the kitchen was unusable and bowls and plates needed to be hired. Once night fell the room turned into a sauna and the air conditioning was ineffective. If it wasn't for the mozzies I would have slept outside to cool down. On complaining the next morning we got little sympathy. If we'd paid more for the room I would definitely expect my money back or a discount. I did notice some rooms being refurbished so perhaps if they do this and sort out the kitchen and air-con it will be a reasonable place to stay.

really loved it! the pool was fantastic and I loved our room. And lucky for me I got the double bed! Awsome having a TV in your room and free movies. Yes the kitchen isn't the best but deal with it -- we backpackers aren't exactly chefs and dont need a chefs equipment to make baked beans! Definitely felt like a resort not a backpackers.

Forget what it says about the kitchen having eight burners. None of them work. The large fridge has a door that doesn't shut properly and mysteriously my food gets stolen from this fridge every time I stay here -- a phenomenon I haven't experienced to the same extent at any other backpackers in Oz. There are very few kitchen utensils, pots, pans etc. In short it was impossible for us to cook a meal in this kitchen and we were forced to go eat at the resort's seventeen-dollar buffet dinner, which incidentally was very good. There's a TV in the kitchen that also hasn't worked in two years. The rooms don't seem as clean as they could be and management has this bizarre policy that your nineteen dollars should entitle you to a bottom sheet only and not a top sheet. They expect you to bring a sleeping bag, I guess, which would actually be illegal if this were the case, given Australia's laws regarding hostel cleanliness and begbugs. The impression is that this is a resort that management is allowing to go to pack. Very sad because with a little work, a small investment, and a management that cared, this could be a really top place to stay. The big plus here is that the rooms have air conditioners that still work, which is a Godsend on a steamy hot tropical summer day. The only question is, how much longer will they work given the attitude of management regarding maintenance of this place?

This place is a dump. It has rude staff and bedbugs.
