The Hostelz.com Review
Melbourne Connection Travellers Hostel is a medium-sized hostel located a short walk from the main railway station and only a few short blocks to the main shopping streets of the city as well as Victoria Market. It is also a two minute walk to the airport shuttle point and about ten minutes from the Greyhound station. Also nearby are various eating establishments and bars. In other words, you'll probably find the location to be pretty nice.

The hostel itself is clean and welcoming. The main floor includes the reception, which does close for the night and early morning, but you can always get the attention of the night staff on duty if you arrive late. The main door is card-entry, while rooms use traditional keys, and there is a key-deposit. Upon checking in, you will receive sheets and a blanket along with your keys. Some rooms are located on the main floor, while more are located on the first. The large dorm is very spacious, and rooms include security lockers, which is always a good thing to have handy. The beds are fairly comfortable, though the pillows are a tad worse for wear. On both floors you will also find a row of spacious bathrooms, which each include toilet, shower, sink and mirror.

The kitchen is rather on the small side, but functional. Breakfast is served each morning (including cereal, not just toast!) and dinners are occasionally free as well. There are a few tables outside of the kitchen where you will often find travellers relaxing. The main floor also includes a small seating area near the stairs where bookworms can find a relaxing and somewhat quiet area to read. Upstairs you will find the tv room with satellite tv, and movies are available for borrowing as well.

Melbourne Connection Travellers Hostel is a comfortable place to stay in the city. While Melbourne hostels can be on the slighly more pricey side, this hostel will save you a few dollars without sacrificing quality. Recommended!

1 Wouldn't recommend!
We stayed here in a twin room for four nights. The only good things about the room were that the linen was clean and there was a small fridge in the room so we didn't have to use the ones in the kitchen. However, our room was underneath by the lounge. We had a small window that was at pavement level so you have a view of everybody's feet walking past. It is also on a busy street and this makes it very noisy both during the day and at night. The room was also off the lounge and the TV was left on at full volume till about 3 a.m. and then started again at 7 a.m. You also have everybody else chatting outside the door so don't expect to get a good nights sleep. From what we could hear the rooms upstairs at the back were just as bad because you get the noise from the club. Make sure you take flip-flops for the shower as there isn't a shower curtain so the whole floor gets soaked and when everyone else has been using the bathrooms you wouldn't want to go in there barefoot! We wouldn't stay here again.

1 Not Advisable
It's not kept clean. The kitchen was a disaster zone. Dirty dishes and saucepans are one thing but there was not one clean surface to place food on and nothing to clean up with. The bathroom areas were reminiscent of high school gym facilities, at the end of the day after several groups of students' use. The blinds in my room didn't work so it was either completely dark or completely open. It is above a bar but that isn't a big deal. However, there is no soundproofing and you not only hear the bar but also the traffic with the constant tooting of the car horns and every drunken conversation. That's coming from someone who sleeps soundly too. Be sure to pack lightly and compactly. There is only one narrow stairwell leading up to the rooms. And definitely no offer of help of assistance from staff either. I helped one poor girl take her bags up to her room. I stayed at this hostel based on the reviews on this site. I am so disappointed that I am providing an update. I've stayed at other backpackers but this by far is the worst one to date.

3 This place didn't have any character. The people staying there were friendly for the most part but it was lacking the atmosphere that I experience in hostels in other areas. The bathrooms were toilets and showers combined and there were only a few so in the morning it was a bit of pain. The kitchen also closed at 10, which sucked when you got the late-night munchies. The location was great!

5 Famous amongst the English and German backpackers. This is arguably the best hostel i stayed in Melbourne (stayed two weeks!). Lovely and sexy night crews running the show there. Not a full-on party hostel but they do know when to do it, how and when. Well, after three days, I almost knew everyone there. By the time I left, reckon I knew 90% there! Only setback's the kitchen and the lower-level rooms. Kitchen's a little small but I always do my cooking during off-peak hours. Lower-level rooms aren't great as they only have a small little window. I was lucky to have my whole two weeks in the top level which is the best.

3 I stayed at this hostel for two nights so wasn't there that long and the facilities were adequate, but I felt the hostel lacked atmosphere. I stayed in a private room in the basement with a only a tiny window looking out onto the street at pavement level. The bathrooms were pretty clean, but the kitchen was really small and when I went for the free breakfast there was hardly anything left. However it was quite cheap as Melbourne goes so I don't suppose you can expect too much.

5 This is the consistently friendliest, and best-run hostel we stayed at in Australia. We returned on several occasions.
