Hellhole Stayed there for two months but thought the place was a sh*thole. The only reason why i stayed there was because of work as the tram was just across the busy main road. I made friends there as well which was good. The food was pretty bad. As for the customers in that place -- bunch of lowlife bums, none more so than the resident Tim. He's dirty and grotty who wears the same clothes every single day without fail. If he not downstairs helping his mate Cory (the obese chef) in the kitchen he propped up against the bar getting wasted or upstairs in his grotty room screwing prostitutes. There was a couple of good bar staff, (campell, dom) the rest were tossers, jonny and toby were the worst there. — Debbie , Ireland (2007-12-25)
Proper dump Showers were a joke, toilets were worse. If you ever had a hot shower in this place you were one of the lucky few, when you did you had to mess around with the tap to avoid getting scalded or have a freezing cold shower not to mention a four-minute shower as it took longer to heat the water. The staff were ok but not great and the food was cheap and at times inedible. We were treated by the owners as if we were their kids. After the continental breakfast (toast and corn flakes) we had to wash, dry, and put our cups and bowls away ourselves. Also they state that there is internet but when we asked about it after moving there the owner Colin looked at us and said "no, theres no internet here. I dont know why the internet site says that." As for the music downstairs in the bar, Ive never heard so much talentless trash in all my life. The place would be empty in the evening a lot of the time because of that, which in turn made the place dull. All in all, do not go there if it can be avoided. — Aran and Karen , England and Ireland (2007-08-17)

an amazing hostel, breakfast always as stated great backpacker meals and great quiz night! We stayed here for nearly three months and were made to feel very much at home by the lovely owners colin and barbara! Nothing was ever too much trouble. this hostel does get very busy and you cant expect to have everything done for you (like you do at home), which is what independent travel is all about. The hostel is in the process of having a revamp so the facilities are basic but the warmth and help of the owners makes you feel very much at home and wouldnt hesitate staying there again! — katandwoody (2007-02-04)

After a terrible experience in Sydney we needed a place to restore our faith in hostels and this place certainly did that! We have stayed here for 3 weeks and not had a single problem (other than some noise one night by guests who I think were asked to leave for it; not the place for you if you want to get wrecked every night and keep everyone else awake!). It is what you would expect from a hostel; walls and ceilings need painting, a few broken tiles here and there and showers that have a mind of their own sometimes! But everywhere is clean and tidy (the place is cleaned everyday and you can actually request having your room cleaned other than someone bursting into your bedroom to empty the bin while you are still asleep!) and the pub downstairs is excellent. Great food for $6 per person and good deals on the alcohol for guests! Also not much noise from the pub either (although we were on the 3rd floor so maybe different on the 2nd). Free breakfast is very basic, cereal, toast, and a cup of coffee/tea but a great way to start the day. This place is definitely not the Ritz but as far as budget accommodation goes its the dogs bo**ocks!! Tram stop is just over the road to get into Melbourne also and its only a 5- 10 minute walk into St Kilda. Brilliant!! — Chris (2007-01-27)
The worst experieince of my life! Tired after two days of travelling from U.K. via Thailand, I arrived at this dirty, smelly hostel. My room on the top floor stank of perspiration and I had to buy towels to spread over the bottom bunk with its crumpled smelly sheets. I stayed only the one night even although I had booked for twenty-seven nights because I came from England to be a volunteer at the Commonwealth Games. The toilets and showers were disgraceful with broken barn style doors and a small cold jet of water from the edge of the shower rose. A totally bare bedroom with a double bunk using smelly bed linen, a sticky carpet, no storage space, no free breakfast as stated; no reception open until 1am as stated; no refunds, beware! As a traveller I guess he saw me as an easy target to rip me off. He charged me $50 per night after advising me that it would normally be $70 during the time of the Games, but a lovely lady from Queensland who was also staying there, described the whole place as "the pits" and she was only being charged $36 per night for the privilege. He also refused to give her a refund so that she could move somewhere else. He takes the money up front before you can see the room and when you complain he says "I do not give refunds." I did get a refund eventually, having stayed only one night instead of twenty-seven nights, but that one night cost me my $500 deposit. The taxi driver who took me there from the airport was not surprised to get a call from me the very next day, he said he could not understand me even staying the one night. After three return visits I eventually got my other money returned. — Catherine Tompkins (2006-06-11)
Directions to this place are bad. If you arrive by Greyhound, go outside, turn left -- go up to street where the trams are going by. You want to catch a tram going downhill. It'll take about twenty minutes. I tried ringing this place several times, with no answer. I arrived -- reception was closed, although supposed to be open until one a.m. on Saturdays. I had to push my way through the bar. Kitchen very small and inadequate. Same as kitchen and food storage space. Not enough crockery, knives/forks etc. Showers have no doors, just a curtain. Womens bathroom is just that, a bathroom. No toilet. One of the showers had the handles broken off. Noisy live band downstairs and around three a.m., everyone came upstairs to shout for about an hour. At the time of writing this, there is no internet. — DRW (2006-05-06)

I loved this hostel. I stayed for a week in feb 2006; it was very clean, close to tram and trains.
Walking distance to chapel st, fitzroy st, and luna park!
Bar was great. Really cheap drinks fantastic staff! and terrific food including $6 meals!
Thanks to all the staff for a great holiday! — Tegan (2006-02-12)

This is the best hostel/backpacker to stay in. I stayed for a week and it is great. It is clean, friendly and all the staff are so friendly, outgoing and helpful. I would stay there again when I'm back in Melbourne.
It is close to everything — the tram, buses, city center and shopping. And the food (meals) is cheap and great at the hostel. Excellent place to stay if anyone wants to stay in Melbourne.
Thank you to all the staff for looking after me. I wish you all the best. — Sikeli (2005-08-23)

This was the best place to stay in the whole of Australia. I stayed here for six months, and also worked behind the bar. I would recommend the Pint to all ages. — Swanny (2004-10-05)
This hostel was the coldest hostel I have ever stayed in — don't come here in winter. There was no atmosphere here, and as for the bar it was very quiet. The staff aren't particularly friendly, either! It is also very far out from the city. Overall, I couldn't wait to get out of here, as it was also very expensive. The shower rooms were freezing and the windows were broken. I could go on! — Anonymous (2004-10-04)

Excellent! I always try to stop in here on my way to the city on the tram, and talk to Corey and whoever is working at the bar. — Tim Chmielewski (2004-09-29)

The management was absolutely fantastic! The hostel was clean and safe, and everything you could want was provided. The bar downstairs was a hoot! There were bands all weekend and a free beer! If you're coming to Melbourne, you gotta stay here. — Casey (2004-08-11)
It's dirty, and the pub isn't patronized by the backpackers. The bar maids were good about letting us in if we were locked out, but that's the only good thing I have to say about the place. It's old and smelly. — Anonymous (2004-07-17)

Excellent place with very friendly staff. Good size hostel - just the right size to ensure that it isn't impersonal. The owner, Anthony, is a sound bloke who makes the effort to speak to everyone everyday and know you by name, not just face. Great food, at reasonable prices in the pub downstairs. — Gary B (2004-02-08)

A friendly, homely, lively hostel with plenty of summer action in the bar. One of the best hostels I have stayed at. The bar is the place to be. All my friends have been from the Pint on Punt 2001. — jon (2003-11-29)
