The Hostelz.com Review
Patey's Place is one of those hostels you stumble across and straight away understand why you've never heard of it -- no one wants to tell you. It's a hidden gem and even from the street you'll find no signage for the hostel.

It really is like staying in someone's house. The living room is very homey and comfortable, complete with premium cable TV (which you'll also get in the private rooms if you're lucky enough to be staying there). The kitchen and laundry areas are clean and well-stocked. Outdoors is also a relaxing place to hang out in the tropical gardens, and there's a BBQ for use of guests.

Dorm rooms are simple but very clean and lack the normal sterile atmosphere that you're probably used to at other hostels (an obvious positive!). The bathrooms are very very clean and possibly the most upmarket you're likely to find in Hawaii. What you won't find here is a wild party atmosphere. Common areas shut at 10 p.m. and after that it's quiet time inside. If you're after a wild party hostel than go elsewhere, but if you're after somewhere to call home and be welcomed by the friendly staff, then stay here. It's not like you can't party in town anyway, the main strip with bars and clubs in Lahaina is only fifty meters away. You'd be hard pressed to find a club that's not open on weekdays either.

From the airport in Maui you can connect to Lahaina for a few dollars. Buses leave every hour and Patey's Place is a quick five-meter walk. Just note the address so you can figure out which place is the hostel! There's heaps of stuff to do nearby and lots of tour operators more than willing to help you out. You'll need some extra money for the key deposit at Patey's Place.

4  It's what you make of it -- sorta like life Word has it that the Koa Wood Hale hostel used to be across the street from Patey's Place, but when they closed, the smart folks at Patey's added that name to their own, so all roads would lead to them. Thus it was that I came to stay there one week in early 2011. The accoms are ok. I stayed in a dorm room for several days with various folks coming and going over that time. The bathroom could use a good strong exhaust fan to deal with the shower steam, and while the floor mopping was consistent, it made for a slick walk to one's room. Beats a dirty floor, but maybe a big floor fan to dry it would be good for them to use. The staff see LOTS of folks come and go (and that takes a toll), so don't expect them to kiss your butt or be your best friend. If you want a servant, go to a hotel. That said, I found the staff to be nice, though perhaps a bit standoffish at first (hey, they have jobs to do and are not on vacation like you). After a few days, I found them all very friendly. The hostel staff seem to try and foster a different atmosphere than any other hostel I have been to -- a small respectful community. An overall friendly vibe pervaded the place and I met lots of very nice travelers to take day trips with. We'd split in the morning, have adventures and then return to "home base" with tales of our adventures. Often we'd go out for dinner or drinks or cook food together at the hostel. Expect pretty strict quiet hours, and THANK YOU P.P. STAFF! I stayed at several other hostels on the Big Island and rarely got decent sleep because of noisy guests. Lousy sleep can ruin your (next) day -- and hey, it wasn't cheap to get to Hawaii! Kona is a land-use nightmare (crappy for walking and biking, and I've seen better bus systems in developing countries). That said, the hostel is pretty conveniently located near "the strip" on Ali'i Drive, and near both stores and the highway, with good access to the airport. Parking is a bit scant for folks with cars. Would I stay there again? Yeah, I would. I'd probably spring for a private or semi-private room though for a bit more privacy. Plus, those are on the second floor, which has a balcony with a great sunset view (though all can use it). Traveling is made of memories. I remember the folks I met as Patey's Place, while I don't remember names from the other hostels and places I stayed at. That says something.  , United States ()
1  Horrible do what you can to stay away. there are plenty of places to stay that are much more comfortable, and polite. if you come to stay here and have never visited hawaii, you will leave regretting you ever came.  , usa ()
3  Well it did the job but could have easily been a better experience this place was in a easy to find location! it had a nice kitchen and nice bathroom but the dorm was hot and dirty. the thing that bugged me the most was the fat dark haired guy from northern U.S.A. that ran the place. i am from canada and he ripped canada apart the whole time i was there. he did not have one good thing to say about canada and was not shy about what he thought about our country. i found this very rude and not very welcoming. i probably would stay here again just because i dont have much money but i would not talk to this idiot again.  , canada ()
2  I reserved a private room with private bath, and was even quoted the price for the private room with private bath. But when we got there we got a private room with no bath. Parking is a problem -- we parked on the street and someone left us a disparaging note. It's just like any other hostel -- an old dingy building and not great. You can hear what is going on in the rest of the building (including the upstairs neighbors having sex in the middle of the night). Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because fares are low you can afford to go to Maui. Wait until you can afford to stay in a real place. We left early and of course they kept our money.  , Hawaii, USA ()
5  This was my very first experience at staying at a Hostel. What a DELIGHT! Josh, Melinda and Barry made it feel like home. Very comfortable. Very laid back. Very clean. Very close to EVERYTHING! Walk to all in Lahaina. I stayed a couple of weeks. If and when I return, I won't stay anywhere else, but Patey's! It will feel like I am going home to Mom & Dad's! Don't listen to the negative comments. They are NOT TRUE! I was a woman traveling alone. The staff took great care to provide a safe and pleasant environment. I met many very interesting people from all over the world. Some of whom, I will stay in contact with, via e-mail! We had family dinners while there, with everyone contributing something. What could have been a lonely time in a Hotel, turned into a warm and cozy new found family home. Thank you, Thank you to the Owner of Patey's and to the FIVE STAR STAFF! WOW! FANTASTIC! I'm GLAD I DID IT!  ()
5  In Nov '98, my brother and I were looking around for a place to hang our hats. Looked like our kind of place but was full at the time. They are basic accommodations but not dirty or rundown. Just not comparable to the hotels with the pewter shower faucets and marble walls. The people staying there were very friendly and laid back. Will stay one day.  ()
5  This is definitely the best hostel on Hawaii. Clean, central, friendly -- go there!  ()
1  There was a huge bedbug problem here. I am not one to complain, but this was pretty bad. I brought my own sheets and pillow cases and still ended up coververed in bug bites every morning. By the end of the trip I had so many bites that I had an allergic reaction and had to go to the doctor in Lahaina. Not a fun experience.  ()
1  I would not recommend this place to ANYONE ever. We made reservations and when we arrived two days later they didn't appear to be there. They had written down the wrong name and then would not give us what we reserved. After that got figured out we got ALOT of nasty looks from people staying there and some were from the manager himself. First night — fairly clean but not comfortable and the shower just had what appeared to be a screw handle to operate it and no hot or cold adjustments. It was clean though. Second night we came in and the food we had in a marked bag in the fridge had disappeared. We tried to use the stove and all 4 burners did not operate. We very quickly made a phone call and left the place. I might add that the handle was about to fall off on the pot we found to use, if that tells you anything about the kitchen supplies! And the sink had dirty dishes. It was not a comfortable or friendly place in anyway to us. The 48-hour cancellation notice meant they also kept our money for the night we left and the next night, too. But it was WAY, WAY worth getting out of there. I would recommend sleeping in your car or on the beach before this place. I hope the owners find out that it is falling apart and the management is not the least bit polite or friendly. The manager is passive aggressive — he is polite to your face though, after rolling his eyes and taking many minutes to force a smile on his face before he greets you. It was my first trip to Hawaii and this was the worse experience I have had anywhere. The good thing about it is that it is in a great spot close to everything, and a few blocks from the water.  ()
2  Don't stay here if you want to enjoy your vacation. The staff will come in to your room to tell you to turn the lights off after 10 p.m. The manager is a passive aggressive ***hole and has taken over the whole place. They'll tell you there's a one-month maximum stay but people live in the dorms and dominate the entire situation. They have lights-out rules, no alcohol, and no talking after 10 p.m. That's okay if you want to stay here with your grandma but why would any traveler, who is paying for a place to stay, want to have someone act like their mother. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Oh yeah, there is so much food left out by guests that there is a severe cockroach problem in the kitchen and rooms.  ()
5  This place is clean and close to whatever you need! It's definitely my first choice when I return to Maui.  ()
5  This place was great—the staff were friendly, the facilities were clean, and most importantly, everything is within walking distance. My friend and I stayed here for a few nights in one of the private rooms. Besides the fact that there was no air-conditioning, the room was great. It had a wardrobe and drawers for all our stuff. The place is really laid-back, and it's good to come back to after a hard day of walking and sight-seeing. I definitely recommend it.  ()
5  It is very clean. I was worried, having heard horror stories about other places in Maui having beg bugs and other icky things. The location was great, right in town, a block or so off the main street which is full of bars, restaurants, galleries and shops. It would have been even better if I had a car, but on a bike you can get further up the coast into resort-land in about 20 minutes. The staff were wonderful, just lovely, and the hostel was filled with interesting, cool people. There was a really nice feeling to the place. I will definitely stay here again, even if I do ever have enough cash for the Marriott.  ()
5  Very clean and quiet. They have nice guests and a great staff. Excellent location!  ()
