The Hostelz.com Review
Nimmo's Hostel gets guests because it is very cheap and has an excellent location within Galway, but it is dirty and rundown. It's just a five-minute walk from the bus station. Staff are not on site and the dorm beds are not assigned so be sure to mark "your" bed when find the one you want.

The Location

The location is really good and only a couple of minutes from the bus station. Galway is a nice town and the hostel is surrounded by pubs and restaurants. However, it is next to a loud nightclub that provides not only noise but a steady stream of drunk people. The nightclub is loud until 4 or 5 in the morning so don't plan on going to bed early.

Rooms and Bathrooms

All of the beds are in ten- or twelve-bed mixed dorms. The rooms are very dirty and the bathrooms are even dirtier. The bathrooms are mixed gender and without locks. In general, it seems that no money has been spent to update or maintain the premises. They do have free linen and free lockers. It is not secure, so guests need to supply their own locks.

Common Spaces

The common areas are dirty and have ripped and stained sofas. There is a kitchen for guest use but it also could use a good cleaning. There is a TV with cable channels and there is free Wi-Fi. If you need the internet and don't have a laptop, you will have to go to an internet cafe. The crowd here is long-time residents and young party people that just need a place to crash. There is no laundry on site and breakfast is not provided in the price.

Summary

If you are looking for a party hostel that is very cheap and in a good location, and you don't mind a little dirt, then this is your place. It is definitely for the young party crowd that only wants a place to wash up and flop for the night. There are lots of people staying that have been here for months, so it is not really the social-traveler atmosphere expected in hostels. The best thing going for it is that it is the cheapest place to stay in a prime location.

5  Great! It's a very nice, warm, and convivial hostel! The landlord is really cool and has been really kind to us. When it was cold, we got the heating as long as we wanted, and we had great great fun there! I recommend this place to every young person who seeks adventure and friendship in a multicultural and open-minded atmosphere!  , French ()
1  Not so good it's actually weird to post a comment on this hostel. I mean, the position is great. If you are gonna sleep there, don't miss a visit to the pub just down the hostel. They play good music on sunday night. The atmosphere in the hostel is good. There are plenty of people. The hostel has a big kitchen and a rest room with TV, books. The problem is, this hostel is dirty! it should really be renewed, it's a creepy place actually! I'm not sure the linen were clean, the moquette on the floor was old. The little man running it is nice and I think he makes all by himself. So if you're gonna stay there one night it's ok, because it's really cheap. If you are planning to stay more, then maybe another place will be better!  , Italy ()
2  Average This hostel is pretty average, quite expensive but thats usual for ireland. the kitchen is well appointed and the TV room is good but thats the best bits. the roof leaks so if your on the top floor (half the rooms are) and it rains (it does a lot here) you might end up with water dripping on your bed/bags. the bathrooms were not filthy but not super clean, there is no internet at all but you can go a minute down the road to a internet cafe. there is also no clothes washing facilities at all. The sheets on the bed looked a bit dirty, maybe because there was no washing machine. If I was going back to galway I would try book somewhere else if possible.  , New Zealand ()
An adventure I lived there in the Summer of 2004 and 2005. In 2005 I worked a month or so as manager. The weird thing is that when the manager before me quit, I just sort of took over, as there was no one else in charge. The owner did not even seem to care about finding out what's going on. He just walks in after a week that I was working, asked me for the money for the rooms, and left. He did not even introduce himself, or thank me for taking over and letting his place go to hell. It was bizarre. I was like the fifth or sixth manager there that summer. If you want adventure and the unexpected, stay in this hostel. Big Thumbs Up!  , USA ()
1  Horrible, Unsafe Dirty place, foolish people. someone stole my phone during the night. I was disgusted. Places like that shouldn't be accepted.  , France ()
2  I actually used to work at this hostel. I would have given it one star but for the (very) intersting experience that can be had here. The owner is a slum lord, and the revolving door of "managment" is usually out to...lunch. Still, if you fancy buckfast and a game of shithead, this is the place for you.  ()
1  Please avoid this hostel if you are a woman!! A girl was sexually assaulted here in June 2005 — it was all over the papers and featured on the Gerry Ryan show. The staff and owner were horrible to her and refused to give her a refund for the nights she had pre-paid when she first arrived and they did nothing to help her after the assault. This place is not only dirty but also dangerous!  ()
1  I've stayed in many hostels around the world of varying standards and this is the worst, most disgusting, grotty, dirty, foul and smelly place I have ever stayed in. (I stayed in July 2005.) We were forced to stay in here due to last minute booking and found it after trying every other hostel in town, which were all full. Before finding it, we contemplated sleeping in the car. This would have been significantly more pleasant. Under no cost should you stay here. There are reviews saying you can get to know good people etc., etc., but this does not even begin to make up for the appalling state of the place. From talking to people we were staying in a room with who had talked to the owner, they said that he himself said that he did not care about the standard as the nature of hostels is that they are for travelers who won't be back anyway. A great attitude, considering his business. I could go on to talk about the unhoovered floors, filthy kitchen, toilets/bathrooms, beds and windows, the ancient, and the hole-y mattresses no doubt rife with insect infestations, but I'll leave that to your imagination and hopefully not your experience.  ()
5  This hostel is the main attraction for me in Galway. :) It has a great and weird social life inside. I've stayed there twice and I'm going to come back again!  ()
3  Well, this hostel is sure not the best in Galway, but to meet people and party it is fantastic. But it's nothing for families and little children. It's a traveler's hostel. I had wonderful two months there; I enjoyed it so much!  ()
3  I'm from Catalonia, and I live in this hostel now. For me, it was the best place to start my trip in Ireland. It's the cheapest, and the people are very interesting. Galway is the best city of Ireland!!!  ()
5  I lived there for the summer. The guests are very friendly and it is a very unique hostel. I met people from all walks of life from different types of countries. I would definitely recommend it if you would like a good authentic hostel experience!! Wouldn't you agree?  ()
5  This is the best place in the world. It has the best people in the world and the best atmosphere in the world. What else can I say?  ()
3  I'm from Italy, and I was in Galway this summer. The Arch View Hostel is five-minute walk from the train or bus station. The prices are very low, but all the rooms are dormitories. It's the cheapest! Galway is a very, very, very, nice city!  ()
