5  Great value for money, very clean, great staff Though the hostel was still going through renovations we loved the place, The room was clean, the staff were friendly and helpful. To quote my nieces 'the hotel is fully sick'. The place has been totally renovated, with movie room, kitchen and brand new rooms and bathroom facilities. I will definitely stay there again and would recommend the hostel to anyone coming to Melbourne  , Australia ()
2  Less than impressed Don't always judge a place by their website, because it can be severely misleading. This hostel should make the fact that they are carrying out major renovations more obvious on their website -- the place is an absolute mess. Out of the three staff I encountered on the desk, only the guy was actually polite. I had to restrain myself from commenting about their rudeness, especially on the phone when I booked. Toilets and showers at times were quite disgusting -- with toilet paper running out and no sanitary bins. I started off in a female dorm and couldnt bear the un-airconditioned rooms, so relocated into a single room, which was a great relief. The location was very handy, but again, will recommend you stay away at least until they finish the building, which has also closed the rooftop common area and severely disabled the kitchen facilities.  , Australia ()
5  Excellent Hostel Ive stayed in victoria hall twice now and will be again very soon. it used to be a bit of a sh*thole, however it has had a complete refurb and I think even new ownership and is now one of the fanciest hostels ive ever been in. A definite flashpackers. The first time I stayed here was in a four-bed dorm complete with individual reading lights, two power sockets for each bunk right next to your pillow huge lockers, and even a privacy screen between the two sets of bunks, which is a nice touch. all very modern and clean fittings. second time I stayed here was in a double with my girlfriend, all I can say is it reminded me more of a hotel then a hostel, huge king size bed, large flat screen on the wall with cable channels no en-suite or though there are doubles available with en-suite I understand. and the shared bathrooms are modern and clean anyway or though they are individual toilets with shower rooms attached, which is a bit different as most hostels have blocks of loos and showers. There are plenty on each floor though so no lines. Other than that The hostel has full cinema on one floor (basically a big room with a huge projection TV and cinema style seating) which is something ive never seen in a hostel. large kitchen and even a gym on the top floor. The staff are also very friendly -- guy on reception even remembered me from my last stay when I was checking in with my girlfriend last time I was there. So yeah, the new victoria hall is the best a hostel can offer.  , English ()
4  A few small problems, but an excellent place to stay. I stayed in this place for two months, it is undergoing refurbishment and is much improved since the last reviews were written. The refurbishment workers often started at around 6:30 a.m., been woken up at that time by the sound of Masonry Drills isn't the nicest thing in the world -- but I really enjoyed the time I spent here. They had a weekly deal, which was handy for people staying long term, though I don't know if this still applies. The new four- and six-bed dorm rooms have comfortable beds and are mainly clean, all the beds have lockers (use your own padlock), there are bedside plug sockets and lamps with dimmer switches. There are five self-contained shower/toilet/sink cubicles on each floor, all of which are pretty good. They are clean most of the time, but try to avoid using them at peak time as the showers can be cold. There's a TV room with thirty real cinema seats with a big projector screen, Foxtel, and DVD Player. However the TV room closes at midnight, which seems way too early. Also, you have to make sure the staff know if you want to watch any football (soccer) in the early hours of the morning to make sure the sound is turned back on. The entire room shakes if someone is using the treadmill in the gym upstairs, which also Cross Trainer, Bike, and Multigym but this is more than adequate considering it is free. The kitchen is nothing special, but apparently this another item on the list of things to be refurbished. One of the only problems I found with this place was that it was popular at the weekends with groups of young Australians, they would come in from out of town and use it as a base for nights out in Melbourne, because it is so close to the City Centre. Some of them were alright, but a lot of them were really noisy, rowdy, and had no respect for the place, leaving drinks cans and bottles everywhere, swapping the numbers round on the rooms, waking people up at 3 a.m. And it was suicide if you went to the TV room and tried to turn the AFL off when they were in there. The staff were pretty helpful (I guess everyone has their off-days now and then). Amar on reception was efficient, went out of his way to help and laughed at my jokes (and as they are often terrible, this is taking Customer Service to the next level). All in all, a good place to stay and with the refurbishment there is a marked improvement in the standards at this hostel. There are still some downsides, but I wouldn't hesitate for a second when it came to recommending this place.  , UK ()
1  This was a really bad hostel. Noisy, filthy bathrooms, no comfort, and less than one star.  , Germany ()
1  i cannot say this was the worst place i've stayed in, but quite crap anyways. dirty rooms, no toilet paper in most of the toilets, no doors in most of the shower cubicles -- toilet floors full of dirty shower water. kitchens -- yeah right. tiny 1mx2m corner where you can boil water or microwave your pie. no cutlery, no plates/cups (available from reception, they say). in-house restaurant closed. if you're coming for a long weekend partying trip, might be ok and super cheap -- if you are not going to spend any time in here and eat all your meals out. if backpacking and looking for a hostel, stay out.  ()
1  We have stayed in quite a few places in Australia and this was the worst. Firstly when we arrived after having booked two weeks in advance, we were told there were people sleeping in our room so the four of us would have to split up -- even though we had booked a four-bed dorm we had to move beds into one of the rooms ourselves. They didnt really have any idea what was going on as the people in our room weren't on the system as being there. The rooms were dirty, dull and everything about the place reminded us of an insane asylum -- including the staff and residents -- who obviously weren't backpackers. They were there all day and seemed to occasionally work in the hostel. The bathrooms were covered in dirt and hair (not hair from your head) and one of the showers actaully had someone's poo on the shower wall tiles. Every time we went to the toilet, there was piss on the seat and floor and even once in the sink. One night a girl from another room called one of the staff to ask him to move rooms. She had already asked many times before and wanted to move because she was afraid to sleep in a room with two people who she thought were going to commit suicide. She was told to f**k off and that it wasnt important. Do not stay here!  ()
1  Cheap accommodation, not the worst place I have stayed at on a 10-month trip around the world! The bathrooms were pretty gross and the bedroom walls were very thin. The staff were nice, though.  ()
1  This place sucked!! The walls were very thin and everyone was rude! Never again.  ()
1  This accommodation is the worst in Australia. I tried to contact one of the guests here, and left urgent messages for him. But receptionist never passed the messages on. So I will never recommend this accommodation to anyone from now on. I booked this place for my guest, but that was a big mistake.  ()
1  Actually, less than 1 star. I stayed there as an international student. The room was dirty as hell and I was bitten by ticks over my whole body. I am allergic to insects' poison; I had a 39 degrees C fever and spent over $100 for medicine. I had run away from there but they forced me to pay another a few days rent because they said I had a contract; it was a lie! Also, it was noisy as hell. The walls were so thin, I could hear others very well. Obviously, there was no privacy. I would never recommend this place.  ()
