The Hostelz.com Review
Oslo Hotel for Backpackers is located in the centre of St. Kilda, about five minutes' walk from the beach. The hostel is situated about twenty minutes from Melbourne city centre and can be reached by tram (number 16 or 96). If you are arriving by train or bus, you can catch the tram at Swanston Street as far as the Fitzroy Street station. From here, you literally cross the street and take the turn left to Grey street. The hostel is about three minutes' walk from here.

Grey Street itself is famed for its lively street entertainment, as it plays host to the area's red-light district! However, fear not -- the hostel is still a safe place to stay and the most shocking thing you'll need to deal with in the vicinity is the leering men in cars slowing up to check whether you are working the street or not! Just be sensible walking around at night and you will be fine.

Oslo is a friendly place that welcomes backpackers with open arms. It has a more personal touch than many hostels we have encountered and the staff appear genuinely interested in getting to know the guests of their establishment. At first sight, Oslo appears outdated, both inside and out, but there's more to this place than meets the eye! If you are willing to see past the old-fashioned building and dorms, you will discover the charm that Oslo has to offer. The rates are reasonable and weekly rates are offered if you plan on sticking around. There's a really chilled, friendly vibe around the place, which caters to most tastes, and above all, makes you feel welcome.

There are kitchen facilities but, they could not be described as modern. However, the kitchen is generally clean and well-kept. Cutlery and crockery are provided but there is often a shortage -- especially of cups. There are a couple of large fridges and reception provides storage boxes for your food. The bathrooms are clean and showers are well maintained and cleaned daily. However cleaning usually takes place in the afternoon so beware after fellow hostelers have been out on the town the night before.

Internet is provided and there is twenty-four-hour access once you have your prepaid card from reception. The common areas are great. There's a lounge area with leather couches and also a separate TV room. This is a great place to meet other guests and hang out. There's usually a good crowd in here in the evenings. The pool table does exist (it sits in viewing line of the TV) but during our visit, it was covered up with sheets.

The dorm rooms aren't the most spacious but are fairly standard for hostels in Australia. The beds are in good condition and the free linen is clean. There is a separate girls dorm in Oslo, complete with its own common area. The rooms are also vacuumed regularly.

Overall, Oslo Hotel is a great place to spend your time in Melbourne. It has that old-style charm that is lost in many of the larger, more modern hostels. The facilities, while not sparklingly new, are more than adequate and the general vibe of the place is friendly and relaxed. If you can handle a hostel that's a little rough around the edges, then Oslo's the place for you!

Good
It wasnt the best we been to but it was very friendly staff and quite hostel. The staff isn't so fuzzy. The location is perfect if you want to be near the beach, restaurants, cafes, and pubs.

Do not go to this place
Dorm are like jails. The owner is a big douche. Kitchen is "WHAT A F***." And the rates change every time. I paid 235dol/week just because it's the "grand prix." I didn't have choice and they knew it. Our website look good. Our hostel look crap. Seriously go somewhere elee if you want to enjoy st kilda.

This is a great hotel with good service and excellent rooms with modern amenities like flat screen TVs and DVD players. Restaurant is also worth visiting, as it the bar (great cocktails). Get a room with a view of the Mersey if you can.

Awful
The place is filthy. The kitchen is filthy and a fire hazard because management wont replace dirty, faulty electrical appliances. The mattress felt like I was being swallowed up in a hole. The shower/toilets are unisex -- why? -- with a big gap under the door. Under good management, this place could be great.

It was definitely the worst accommodation i have ever stayed in. Stained sheets, black footprints on the wall next to the bed, bathrooms were disgusting, top floor bathroom leaked into the second floor, bathrooms and kitchens were disgustingly dirty. Staff were pervy and i slept with one eye open. Everywhere smelt really bad and a lot of the other guests were quite disturbing as well. Not for the young holidaymaker or faint hearted.

No stars are deserved for this place. It is the worst place that we have ever stayed in. Upon our arrival our room had not been cleaned and we continued to wait for half an hour. We then went up to our room and it was still not clean. We had to leave our baggage in the room. The hostel did not even apologize. After we returned, our food had been stolen by the cleaner. Everything in this place was broken. There was no good cooking equipment. Our window didn't lock. The towels were wet. One of the showers had no hot water and most of the staff didn't care. If you can, avoid this hostel at all costs!

stayed here for approx 1 month. just turned up on the door with 2 mates. Guy at the desk said he could give us a room to ourselves for about $200 a week. bargain. Three single beds (no bunks, wardrobes, and own balcony.pretty clean and tidy too. Few down points, you have to walk a long way to the kitchen which is really small, cold and damp, you can't watch the tv properly as there is a pool table infront of it and only bench seating to the sides and the whole place is open to the elements. not great in winter. I litterally cried when I forced myself to shower or needed the loo in the night. Oh and the entertainment from the prozzies outside is unriveled. Stay here if you're skint and alreadyhave a good group of mates.fitzroy street is great for food & booze.don't stay here alone or in winter for that matter!!

I stayed here in 2001 and had best month ever. I met some fantastic people. The staff were great and very friendly and very helpful. I loved every minute. Keep it up; I wish I could be back. I love you all; take care. What happened to the kiwi who used to work on the desk for years? He was great.

We never got our weekly room service (change linen and vacuum). You had to pay $2 per game of pool (doesn't sound free to me). When asked for airport pick up we were told they didn't do it and to get a taxi, which cost $45!!! We found it very difficult to change our travellers checqes and were charge $6 per checqe!!! I would not recommend this hostel to any one!
