The Hostelz.com Review
We found Shaker Woods Farm to be a quiet retreat on an otherwise busy section of the lakes region in New Hampshire. Beautifully situated, it captures the northern New England essence close to perfectly.
The Location
It is located on its own working farm, right off Route 3 halfway between Tilton and Laconia. It's a touristy place in the summer but you're slightly off the main road to an affordable, quiet retreat while still staying close to the fun and action of the lakes region. It's only about two hundred yards from Lake Winnipesaukee.
Rooms and Bathrooms
After seeing the private room, which is too expensive for its size, we decided to see the dorms -- which are located in an old horse barn. We decided to go with the dorm room, thanks to the very affordable price and also the fact that we were alone, making for a peaceful night. Bathrooms and showers are clean, and the breakfast you get is amazing -- homemade, and much better than a hotel, and so much more affordable.
Common Spaces
All the common spaces are modern but at the same time classic and charming. They have Wi-Fi throughout the house and most of the property. You are able to roam around the garden and farmland at will and explore the beautifully simple and rustic feel of this authentic New Hampshire farm. They have beds of gorgeous flowers -- some were in bloom when we went -- as well as spinach and some other vegetables. They have a few horses they borrow for the summer from the neighbors.
Another favorite spot of ours in addition to the outside of the property was the sun room, a glass enclosed porch overlooking the property -- it was a great day to just sit out and relax, inside but out at the same time. If we'd had ugly weather, we would have spent the day in the media "living" room area -- complete with couch, TV, computer, and the kitchen within easy reach in case of the munchies. You could also have a full cooked meal in their full-sized, shared guest kitchen.
Summary
This is a terrific spot that's close yet far away and affordable yet luxurious in its own simple yet grand sense.
