The Hostelz.com Review
Auberge La Maison Majorique Tadoussac is the only hostel in Tadoussac. It's quite large and was purpose built to be a hostel. It has a bit of a weird vibe, but the staff are friendly and helpful. Everything is clean and tidy. It's in a good location -- except the giant hill you need to walk up to get to the bus stop when you want to leave. There is a supermarket nearby and everything is in walking distance. There is a bar connected to the back of the hostel which is open during the day and at night.
Sheets are $3 per bed per stay and breakfast and dinner are available to buy. Dinner is a communal sit down affair with a salad, main course, and dessert are served for $8. Breakfast is $3.75 and consists of coffee, milk, cereal, toast, spreads, and cook your own eggs and pancakes. It's all you can eat. There's (expensive) internet access for $1 per 10 minutes and laundry is available in the afternoon for $4. The kitchen is available 10:30am-10:00pm, but it gets very busy around 8 when everyone is hungry and they are serving the dinner at the same time.
The dorms are small and simple, but clean and tidy. There are no locks on the doors, but keep your window closed to keep the flies out and the heat in –- it gets cold at night. Also cold are the showers, unfortunately. Regardless of when you shower the hot water only lasts about 30 seconds. It's also a noisy place at night, partially due to the design of the building and people stomping past your room on hard floors, and partially due to the bar downstairs playing loud, often live, music all night.
The hostel will give you information on local sights which is very helpful because, as in the rest of Quebec, the tourist office only has brochures in French. The hostel runs kayaking tours where you can see beavers on the lake across the road and they can take you for walks too. Activities locally include hiking, beaver watching, whale watching, kayaking, bear watching, and seal watching.

Crawling with BedBugs! The place was great, except for being slightly dirty and having bed bugs. I went with a large group and know that about 10 other people got bedbugs as well. Luckily, my bites showed up BEFORE I actually left the hostel so I did not bring them home with me. But, my bites were terrible, overall I had over 60 bites all over my body. I also had a severe reaction and had to be put on steroids and then prescription-strength antihistamines. It took a full 3 weeks before they FINALLY started to heal and the redness went down. I showed them my bites upon leaving and they only gave me a 10% discount. By the time I arrived home the next day, my bites had blown up and were oozing with pus. I called them to let them know the severity, and tried to get the rest of the money back. They made up some BS story about how the boss has been in the hospital for months and he needs to be the one to sign the cheque. It's not as if I was asking for much money back! Only about $30! But think about it, if they cause trouble over a 30$ refund, do you really think they would bother to spend the money to replace all their mattresses? Hell no! So if you go there, you have a great chance of getting bedbugs. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones not to get them. Or maybe you'll be like me. But even if you aren't bitten and/or react to the bites, it does not stop them from crawling all over you while you sleep. Nor does it stop you from carrying them home with you, where you may eventually react or infect someone else. Not worth the risk! — Sarah , Canada (2011-02-22)
Suits the bar crowd but not the outdoor enthusiast Our group of 9 Venturers (15 and 16 years old) and 3 adults camped at the hostel in early July. We rented the large on-site tent which is good for a group. On the plus side, the front desk staff were very helpful. On the negative side, parking was a problem (bar patrons). We had mixed information about access to the kitchen. The small kitchen is used by the staff to prepare meals, making it unavailable for hostel patrons until 8pm. Opening time in the morning was inconsistent and, again, we had to compete with staff preparing meals. This does not represent the collegial use of kitchens in other hostels -- very disappointing. Loud bar music until 3am, although sometimes entertaining, does not suit hostel clients who need a good sleep and want to get up early to prepare breakfast and to start their day of biking, hiking, kayaking. — 1st Nepean Venturers (Scouts) , Canada (2010-07-06)

Comfortable and Nice This place had a great atmosphere with informal live music throughout the day and night, a nice gathering area and a bar that spills out onto a great deck. It's actually the first hostel I ever stayed at, so I have nothing to compare it with, but I had so much fun there. The staff are all super friendly and accommodating. It is definitely a little noisy at night, but for a quieter stay, they have an annex down the road (Maison Alexis) that has quiet hours starting at 10:30 p.m. I would definitely recommend a stay here, and Tadoussac is amazing! We were there in October, and did a kayak tour in the fjord, saw some whales, and the scenery is really lovely. — Heather , Canadian (2009-10-04)

Loved it! What a wonderful hostel! The place is fun, top live music, terrific location, and friendly staff. The bar and outside area are great for relaxing and meeting other travelers. The downside is that with the bar and bands, you won't get a quiet sleep if you go to bed early. I'm not a party animal but I loved this place, and, the natural surrounds around Tadoussac are the best I saw in Quebec. Don't miss it -- it's a wonderful place to go! — Andrew , Australian (2008-08-21)
