Not horrible!
Stayed July 6th/7th for jazz festival however due to the poor (and somewhat scary) review of this hostel I waited until I arrived in Montreal so I could see the place for myself before booking. When I walked through the front door I was not only greeted warmly by the staff but I was able to get a room all by myself with a bed, great shower, two sinks, and a toilet for $17.50/night without no prior reservation on one of the busiest weekends of the year for Montreal! Upon my initial arrival though, I did understand why the bad reviews were written. It is a converted, old, and huge school house that could use more interior renovation however the hostel is located in a young and bustling part of town, the houses around the hostel are of lovely architecture. The hostel is located only a few metro stops away from the down town area and the area itself was quite safe as women and men walked the area at 2 and 3 a.m. without worry. The staff and the people who actually lived in the vicinity were helpful and friendly. What has been noted by others as creepiness lends to its charm. Overall Montreal is a really cool culture to experience, so why not get it for a bargain!

Terrible doesn't begin to describe it.
We stayed at this place for one night and let me just say, do not go there. First impressions were that we were staying in a prison/mental asylum. It's really quite terrible inside. We paid for sheets ($3 extra) only to have the other two guys in our room steal our beds with the sheets, leaving us to sleep on the God-awful mattress with uncovered pillow. One can only imagine parasites existed on that. Sleep was interrupted by the neighbours that were pretty easy to hear through the walls, something that you can get anywhere, but hearing the elevator every time someone uses it is a bit much. We kept our stuff locked up at all times and carried what we could because we didn't want to take any chances. Then in the morning, we tried to get a refund for our sheets. The guy said "well it's unfortunate but nothing I can do." I wasn't happy. It was $6 but that wasn't the point. The place is just so bad that I needed to let them know. Basically, spend another $10 and stay somewhere decent.

Me and my friend took this Hostel because it was cheap. Students don't have much money =). When we got there it seemed fine, the bed not so nice and you could here you neighboors fine. A little bit strange but what ever. We had read before that some people had got there personal belongings stolen. So the first day we carried everything with a vaule with us. Like laptops, cellphones and so on. We left one old laptop though. When we got back eveything was in order. So the next day we left our stuff, but hid our laptops exept the old one, just in case. When we got back that evenig our door as unlocked and we made sure that it was lock when we left the room. The old laptop was gone but the hidden ones was still there. The door was not broken so some one had a key and we suspect that the owner had been there, but we don't know. One evening he just opened our door and came in, he got surprised when we were there and had a bad lie about leaving some new sheets or what ever. One evening someone knocked at our door and when we answered that we had gone to bed the person started to pull the door. That was to much for us, so we called some other hostels and could change to a new hostel the same night. When we left the key to the owner, if he remembers, he was really high, which is not uncommon but anyway. At the same time our neighboors moved out and they were really mad. So I just wanna say. DON'T STAY AT THIS PLACE IF YOU DON'T WANNA LIVE AT A MENTAL INSTITUTION WERE YOUR THINGS HAS A BIG RISK OF GETTING STOLEN IF YOU DON'T CARRY THEM WITH YOU. PAY MORE FOR ANOTHER HOSTEL.

Over the years I have stayed here a number of times. What it may lag in character it more than makes up in price and security.

This was a pretty decent place to stay. The rooms were clean, the staff helpful, and it's the cheapest hostel bed in town. But it was a bit out of the way and it had little atmosphere. It's not a good place for a lonely traveler alone.
