The Hostelz.com Review
If we had to pick a theme for Midgell Centre, it would be "Nuns at summer camp." Usually used by local church and guiding groups, the place operates as a hostel in the summer months in a not-for-profit venture to support the Centre and its community events for the rest of the year. It's easy to spot, say the locals -- just drive east on Highway Two along the ocean shore and look for the green building with a big cross on it. The towns are tiny and fly by at the rate of two or three a minute, so keep your eyes peeled. If you don't have a car, however, and are not a fanatical cyclist, Midgell Centre is probably too far off the beaten path for you -- there isn't much of anything in the way of public transit in this part of PEI.

The host for your stay will be one of Midgell Centre's friendly and dedicated volunteers, many of whom have been greeting tourists here for decades. They can tell you where to go for dinner or rent a kayak, and can talk Anne of Green Gables with the best of them. The rooms really do harken back to summer camp, with simple wooden bed frames and plastic-covered mattresses. (However, we had an entire floor of one building to ourselves, including a bathroom, which was a welcome opportunity for privacy.) The eating area features a picnic bench for a dining table, and the kitchen is several decades out of date, sporting an ancient telephone and non-functioning fridge. Feel free to ignore the wooden crosses that are the predominant decorating motif, but the house rules do reflect good Christian values -- number one is "No foul language." It shouldn't be a problem to clean up your language for the duration of your stay, but another rule is a bit more trying. The hostel is closed from ten a.m. to four p.m. daily, and if you're planning to come back after ten p.m. you have to inform your host in advance.

And the bugs! Aside from the few creepy-crawlies in our beds (nothing poisonous or biting, thank goodness), the outside of the hostel seems to be engulfed in a swarm of mosquitoes at any given moment. This is fairly standard for Prince Edward Island in the summer, however, so just slather on the deet and hope for the best.

While Midgell Centre is perhaps not the most comfortable of hostels, the price is certainly right -- you can put up with a few mosquitoes for twenty dollars a night -- tax free! On an island filled with overpriced Anne-themed B&Bs, this hostel is a welcome alternative. And you're helping Girl Guides.
