I'd rather give birth to a chair than stay here! Christ, where to start. We arrived at the hostel and one out of the two lifts was broken. Got to reception and they said that the room wont be ready til 2 p.m., which is fine as most hostels do this anyway. We was told to come back at 2 p.m., but when we went back to check in. We found out that the reception closes from 2 to 3 p.m.! So we had to wait another hour to check in. When reception finally opened the lady behind it was so rude and unfriendly to everyone. When we got our key and we had to get the lift to the ninth floor, but as one of the lifts was broken we had to wait fifteen minutes for it to pick us up. Would have walked up the stairs if my bag wasn't heavy. Room was the size of a bloody shoe box with bunk beds that look like they're about to collapse. Crappy walls, crappy carpet! I went to go to the toilet and saw paper towels on the floor everywhere then, the thing that topped it off, was that some classy bastard had done a sh*t on the toilet seat! Used the shower, cold, and pissed out water everywhere except the shower head! I've paid to stay here for a week. I have been staying at Flinders now for about three hours and already all this has happened. I got another week in this dump. Christ knows whats gonna happen. Ive been round the world and stayed in a lot of hostels, this by far is the worst! Don't stay here! — Alex , England (2009-02-02)

Booking is easy but refund is difficult. It was our ill fate not able to be there on the first booking. There was a conflict that suddenly obstructed our Thai international airport. I urgently phoned to let hostel manager know my bad luck. There was no relief or any refund. I am going to spend about a week there on this 24 December. I have made a new easily complete booking. This is my first time to Australia -- we, me and my wife, hope for warm hospitality and if possible some remuneration. — Theerawood Gomutbutra , Thailand (2008-12-14)

Wonderful Great hostel. I stayed there in late 2005 and had a wonderful time. The facilities were great, the staff was friendly and helpful, and most of all -- brilliant location! Right in the city center, across the street from Cole's supermarket, walking distance from Federation Square, and of course, Flinders Street Station. — S. , Israel (2008-08-11)

Great stayed there in 2004 and had so much fun and heading back to melbourne in october this year and may stay a few days again. — arran robertson , new zealand (2008-08-01)

not a bad place to be at all. although lots of two faced and backstabbing people who think they're better than you and also the staff don't seem too keen on having couples -- maybe cos couples don't party as much or something. — jimmyorkshire (2006-08-11)

I stayed here for almost a month earlier this year in an ensuite room so i cant really comment on what the dorms were like. My room was a decent size with a great double bed -- room cleaned everyday -- but beware the cleaners rarely knock and when they do they just come in anyway. once when i was in the shower. Enough said. Sheets and towels were changed on request -- no problems at all. All the staff were fabulous -- couldnt do enough to help or sort out any problems for me. Communal kitchen was huge with good utensils and facilities and was thoroughly cleaned by staff every Sunday afternoon. Also kept pretty clean during the week apart from all the toast crumbs everywhere, lol. This hostel has a its own bar "The Joint" which always seemed packed and had regular live music in another bar "The Green Room" below it -- which is excellent unless you are staying on the fifth floor or below and want a good nights kip without the aid of beer. Security is also pretty good -- rooms have swipe card key system which also activates the front main door at nights and also the floors for the elevator. Dont expect the rooms here to be spotless as they are slightly grubby -- mostly due to wear and tear though as they are cleaned regularly, but the hostel is in an excellent area -- right next to Flinder Stations, twenty-four hour coles and other twenty-four hour food joints, less than five-minute walk into town centre and the same to one of the main tram lines in melbourne to take you to St Kilda, south Melbourne, Q.Vic Markets etc, and the staff an atmosphere here are great. — Kelly (2006-06-04)
This hostel is not the best. The room I shared with three others was the size of most average bathrooms if not smaller (Really, not exaggerating). Sleeping was difficult as you could hardly breathe. At least the water is hot when you have a shower though, even if it is nothing more than mist. The entrance is pretty much a bar as is the reception area. If you are a bum or an alcoholic that doesn't want anything more than a bed to sleep on then this is your place. — Nathan (2006-01-22)

Truth be told, I lived here for most of my time in Australia and I loved it! When I got there it wasn't done up like it is now but when I left it looked like beer in a bottle (brilliant!). There weren't many people but we had great craic!
The 24-hour bar is class. I reckon most of my spare cash went into that till. The beer balcony is a great addition, especially with the barbecue.
Staff are awesome; we made some great mates, too many to name right now. Also, the doormen aren't brainless idiots, they know what they're doing and they're easy to talk to.
Karaoke in the green room on a Wednesday night is ace.
Basically if you love to drink, love to have a great time and love to drink some more then stay here. :D — Col (2005-10-27)

You can book online, they have free DVDs to watch, free breakfast, a clean large kitchen, organized activities, two large lounge rooms and tea, coffee and Nestle Milo [chocolate beverage] whenever you want, and an 11 a.m. checkout. Excellent! — Anon. (2005-09-04)

I absolutely loved this place. Stopped here near the end of my stay in Oz. It's the cleanest hostel I've stopped in. The facilites are fantastic, really clean bathrooms. The kitchen was clean and had plenty of pots, pans etc. Even the bed sheets are white!! Real white, not that kind of off colour they go after so long.
The bar(s) downstairs - Yes, plural, they have two of em!! They were a bit expensive but really good. Whoever thought of putting a 24 hour bar under a hostel was a genius!!! The door staff are the usual brainless idiots, but you get over that for 24 hour drinking.
I can't praise this place enough, it's keycard access so security is excellent and it's just sooo clean. Staff are friendly and helpful. I just loved it!! — Cathy (2005-05-09)

The staff are extremely helpful and nice on the eyes — girls and boys! Beware of Brian as he eats your food! Thanks for the pancakes, though! Luke is disturbingly good looking and Jase Williams is a noodle — only 22 and so fine! It's a wicked place to stay and is very clean and friendly — a great place to be if you want to meet new people and like your drink! The bar staff are all a laugh and look very well in women's clothing, Dean! Seriously, this is the best hostel we've stayed at, mainly for its good location, friendly staff and free laundry and pool table! I miss you loads! — Clare, Lisa and Matt (2005-04-16)

Well it wasn't that bad. I stayed there for a week about a month ago. The mattress was really comfy we thought, not paper-thin at all! The reception staff seemed like they needed a good night's sleep, but they were nice enough. The place was fairly clean, but the rooms were a bit small. Not a bad place to stay, but make sure you have earplugs, as we found it noisy with the trams going past and constant noise of people outside! — Hayley (2005-04-03)
Ugh, never again. I'm pretty sure there was something living in my mattress. I picked up a nice rash and itch after staying here for a couple of nights. — Brad (2005-03-15)

Excellent place. The level 3 reception/lounge area is fantastic, and the boys (Jase and Luke) who look after the place at night are champions. I'll definitely stay there again. — Anonymous (2005-03-10)

I've been staying here regularly for the last couple of years and this place has come so far forward in the last six months or so it's amazing. Reception has been moved into the common lounge/TV/dining area and it's great. The whole place has been refurbished; the new balcony for the level 1 bar is a great place to have a couple of beers during the day. The nightshift boys, Jase and Luke, are great value, too. No way I'd stay anywhere else. — Anonymous (2005-03-02)
