The Hostelz.com Review
Matai Lodge is a fairly large hostel that is spread over a couple of different buildings. This place has all the standard hostel features -- two well equipped kitchens, laundry, payphone, internet kiosks and wireless, many bathrooms, several TV lounges, pool table, fireplace, dining room, and drying room. DVDs and videos can be borrowed for free and there is an xBox. Facilities are clean and tidy and well maintained. There is an emphasis on being environmentally friendly and great recycling system in place. Showers are not hot as the hot water seems to run out easily.
Rooms are well heated in winter. The beds are ok but not the most comfortable. The bunks are homemade wooden ones with soft foam mattresses on them and linen is provided. The main building is quite noisy when people are up and about. The doors are loud when people go in and out of bathrooms and rooms and voices travel quite a bit through the halls and the walls.
Matai Lodge is well located. It's on the main road through town. Very close to the bus stop, supermarket, and information centre. The hostel will pick you up from the train station if you come by train. They have a shuttle service to various places in the local area, including Turoa ski field in winter and the Tongariro crossing. Parking is available.

Worst Hostel I have stayed at Very bad experience staying here. We had to change our booking at the last minute and found the staff very unhelpful. A call to the owner was met with abuse and swearing. Would not recommend this hostel at all. — Scott , NZ (2009-09-08)

I really enjoyed my stay here. The hostel was bright and clean, staff were friendly. It has a tv room with lots of dvds so its sociable and friendly. Heating is always on so its very cozy, but the best part was the powerful hot shower (very much needed after a day on mt ruapehu!). — suzie (2006-10-02)
Possibly the worst place I have ever had the misfortune of staying. Rude staff, tiny rooms, no character, no fun, and possibly New Zealand's worst toilets. Very few toilets per person means the toilets are rarely free, and when they are, they are invariably dirty, smelly, and unpleasant. The staff are rude and unpleasant. The location is ok in the fact that it has a few eateries nearby, but the real life is the other end of Ohakune. To stay at the Matai is simply a last resort in desperate times.
We stayed but ended up cutting short our stay due to the unpleasant atmosphere, small rooms, dirty toilets, and the bad attitude of the appaling staff. A real shame when YHAs in New Zealand are generally excellent. — Rob Clout (2006-08-29)
