I loved the goats! The hostel was probably the best thing about the island really, barring Ruckle Park on the south tip. As I left the hostel it was about to close down, though (autumn/fall 2004) for a few YEARS with plans to reopen as a guesthouse.

Forest Retreat has a nice location, a good kitchen, and a good lounge. I wouldn't bother to book anything except the dorm rooms, as the prices are quite high for what you get.

Comfy haven in the midst of a gorgeous forest. There are plenty of trails to walk on... walk to a beach filled with purple starfish, or a clear lake, or through a lush mossy forest, or to the charming little town... If you go in late summer, there's loads of juicy blackberries. I stayed in the dorm, which was clean and comfortable, a friendly place to meet other travelers. Come out to Salt Spring if you want to get away from the chaos of the city or the backpacker life... and just mellow out in the woods... tranquil without feeling like you're stuck in the middle of nowhere, since the town is accessible and the people are so kind.
