The Hostelz.com Review
Kiwi Basecamp is a small hostel in the heart of Christchurch. It is located on a rather busy street in a two-story wooden building in an area that has lots of accommodation options.
The Location
The hostel is located just north of the city center. Coming from the airport, just take the City Flyer bus to Cathedral Square. From here, it is only a fifteen-minute-walk to get to the hostel. It is easy to find if you have a city map. They will also pick you up at the airport if you advise them in advance and they will drop you back there on departure.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms and bathroom facilities are very clean and tidy -- they are cleaned every day. The rooms have door locks but no indoor lockers. Dorms, most of them with bunk beds, and private rooms are available. The bathrooms are a bit on the small side but sufficient.
Common Spaces
The kitchen is also pretty tidy and only messy at peak times. It is fully equipped and there is a huge fridge which can be used by the guests. In the morning they bake their own bread for breakfast. Free coffee and tea are also provided. There is a TV room to lounge in and computers with internet access and Wireless LAN are both available.
The atmosphere is social and relaxed. You will always meet someone to hang out with in the kitchen or in the common room. It is almost mandatory to cook dinner together in the kitchen. The staff are very friendly and will assist you with your needs. The closest supermarket is quite far away, but the hostel organizes daily “supermarket tours” -- they will drive you there and back so you don't have to carry your groceries.
Summary
In general, the hostel is reasonably priced and ideally located. It is certainly not the Hilton, but you get what you pay for and it is fun place to meet lots of fellow travelers.

Clean & well looked after, friendly & helpful staff, great bread!! We stayed in Kiwi Basecamp for a week when we first arrived in NZ. We were collected from the airport, which was great after such long flights. We had a double room, which clean, airy, and spacious. There are 2 kitchens, which helps at 'rush hour' times and the homemade bread every morning was well worth making the extra effort to get out of bed earlier ... before it got totally demolished!! The staff were very friendly and helpful, and I would stay there again. — Fiona , Ireland (2010-03-23)
