The Hostelz.com Review
This trendy boutique hostel was actually a prison until 1998. Now prison memorabilia lines the corridors and each of the rooms has the original heavy wooden cell doors, replete with slots for food. The rooms are surprisingly bright and spacious, some even have toilet and shower.

The place is very clean and they provide sheets and towels. One complaint is the lighting system -- turning on the bathroom light lightens the whole room. There are two restaurants and a bar attached to the hostel, with parties on summer Saturdays.

The hostel is in a great location. It's a bit creepy, but that's half the fun. As fellow hostelers walk around, you exchange smiles because you realize just how weird this is.

Directions: From station, cross over Seebrucke Bridge. Turn left onto Grendelstrasse. At the end of the street, hang a left onto Grabenstrasse which becomes Lowengraben. The hostel is on the right.

1 Worst stay in Europe -- due to lack of security
The lack of security is a serious concern. With coded doors whose codes never change, any previous hotel guest can re-enter the room years later, with the exact same code. Not sure why there is no lock on the inside of the door either, to prevent unwanted intruders from entering your room. To make things worse! We awoke at 3 a.m. to a stranger who entered our room with a beer bottle in his hand. Thankfully when we confronted him, he left. We will not stay at this hotel ever again, nor would we ever recommend it. Horrible experience. How did we sleep after having an intruder enter our room? We didn't. Made for a very poor experience.

1 Horrible
They lost our reservations, which is understandable I guess. Staying here was literally like staying in a jail. It was a horrible experience all around. Don't go during the summer (especially in a heatwave) because there is no air and it is horribly horribly awfully disgustingly hot. I took a freezing cold shower and I was still hot. The rooms are cramped and the people working there aren't very polite. Unless you book one of the fancy rooms, consider this the same as a night in jail.

3 Fun but Wouldnt Return
It was fun, very unique for sure. However, our concern was for the security. many of the rooms had the same codes, and the locks were not changed between guests, so any person who has stayed there previously could get into your room. The students on our trip (myself) liked it, however the chaperones were not impressed and would not be returning in the future.

5 This hotel is awesome, it's very clean and though it's weird to sleep in what used to be a jail, it's a cool experience.

5 This is best place to stay in Lucerne. Our room was very clean. The bar really attracts locals and tourists alike at night with fun DJs. It's in a wonderful location -- close to everything. The key code doors are a little tricky to operate.
