This trendy boutique hostel was actually a prison until 1998. Now prison memorabilia lines the corridors and each of the rooms has the original heavy wooden cell doors, replete with slots for food. The rooms are surprisingly bright and spacious, some even have toilet and shower.
The place is very clean and they provide sheets and towels. One complaint is the lighting system -- turning on the bathroom light lightens the whole room. There are two restaurants and a bar attached to the hostel, with parties on summer Saturdays.
The hostel is in a great location. It's a bit creepy, but that's half the fun. As fellow hostelers walk around, you exchange smiles because you realize just how weird this is.
Directions: From station, cross over Seebrucke Bridge. Turn left onto Grendelstrasse. At the end of the street, hang a left onto Grabenstrasse which becomes Lowengraben. The hostel is on the right.
