The Hostelz.com Review
Jugendherberge Kreuzlingen is a very quiet hostel where we found only three youths, while the rest of the guests were either older women or mothers with their children. It might have to do with the season (April, not high tourist season), but still. It was almost uncomfortably calm.
The Location
If you arrive with the train in Konstanz, which is a city close to Kreuzlingen, you'll have to walk about twenty-five minutes to get to the place. It's fairly easy to find, but be sure to go to the tourist office and get them to map out the hostel for you! If you arrive at Kreuzlingen train station, it's about a ten-minute walk. The hostel is situated near the lake, where you can have some nice walks, but there is no swimming as far as we know.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms have bunk beds and lockers. Also, there's a table in the middle of the room and some might have a balcony. No reading light though! The bathroom and toilets is ok -- clean and new, it seems. They have a disgusting problem in the bathrooms though -- in the morning there would be a couple of tiny flies lying in the sink, dead from having flown into the fluorescent lamps over the sink! Other than that the bathroom is spotless (Swiss clean)!
Common Spaces
There is no kitchen for guests to cook, only one for the hostel staff. They serve breakfast and dinner, which is overpriced, but tastes ok (dinner was lasagne, breakfast was ordinary with bread, cheese, yogurt, milk, and cereals) . There is a very impersonal common room that we don't think anybody used during our stay. If you arrive before check-in time, they let you leave your luggage in the common room or in the hallway. There are some nice balconies for outside seating, a badminton net outside on the lawn, plus some benches. It is not a fun party hostel -- too quiet and too much of a family hostel. You might meet some nice backpackers if you travel during the high season.
Summary
This is a quiet but somewhat boring hostel, mostly because the other guests are families and older women (but might vary, depending on when you travel). You will feel safe and rested, but you won't meet that many backpackers here.
