The Hostelz.com Review
The HI - Dachsen Hostel may be one of the most unique hostels in Europe. Housed inside an ancient castle built in the 1000s, the rooms look out over the largest waterfall in Europe and the traveler can fall asleep to the sounds of the falls.
The Location
The hostel's location is perfect for the avid traveler. The castle is called Schloss Valduz, and it contains a restaurant, banquet facilities, and a tourist shop in addition to the hostel. This site is a prime tourist location, so you'll need to watch out for the crowds of camera-toting tourists that take over the castle's courtyard and the path to the waterfall. However, the crowds disappear around 7 p.m., and then the path to the falls is free (during the day there is a fee) and deserted.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is slightly old, but the sparse facilities are in excellent condition. Three floors of rooms give the option of large mixed dorms with shared bunk beds (not as sketchy as it sounds) to gender-separate rooms. The bathrooms are moderately clean, with small ones on the top floor and large ones with showers, tea room, and bathrooms on the middle floor.
Common Spaces
The hostel functions according to Swiss standards, with a strict lockout and breakfast. The breakfast is free and quite generous, though it mostly consists of bread, cereal, and fruit. Nightlife and crowds of young backpackers are nonexistent, so don't come here if you're looking for the parties and late nights. The nearest town in Schauffhausen, about fifteen minutes' bus ride away.
Summary
This hostel is a great one-night stay between Lake Constance and Zurich, and the nearby vineyards make for excellent afternoon touring.
