The Hostelz.com Review
The Grape Vine Blenheim Backpackers is an older-style hostel in a large converted house overlooking the Opawa River on the outskirts of Blenheim. The first thing that strikes you on entering is the huge noticeboard in the entrance hall, with everything from job listings to items for sale to lifts offered or requested.
The Location
The hostel is located on a quiet street in the industrial part of Blenheim, about fifteen minutes' walk from the main part of town. There is some on-site and street parking available. The back of the hostel is waterfront property, overlooking the Opawa River, and kayaks are available.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms are adequately sized, with three to six beds per room, and a locker for each bed. All rooms have natural lighting -- some with windows, some with skylights. The double rooms are located in a separate building at the front of the property, and are spacious and well appointed. The bathrooms are a bit rundown, but are well sized and clean.
Common Spaces
The smallish kitchen is kept very clean, and has ample fridge space. There is an outdoor deck overlooking the river -- a lovely space for a glass of wine in the evening if the weather is fine. There is also an undercover deck equipped with old couches at the side of the property, which is comfortable but can get smoky. The TV room also has a book exchange and board games. Most of the people we met were working, and had been staying there for a weeks to months.
Summary
The Grape Vine is an older-style hostel that caters well for people looking for work or for longer stays. The owners are very helpful -- we left a beanie behind, and they found it and kept it for us to pick up on our way back. It has a lovely outlook over the Opawa River, and is well recommended.

My stay at the grape vine were the best weeks in my whole three months in NZ. Thanks to the best hostel parents and all the cool guys staying there with me. — Cat , Germany (2007-05-10)
I wouldn't stay there again. old, run down, cold to many people. I moved to a nice small homestay after three days here. — peter (2006-08-17)

This is a decent family run hostel, the owners are incredibly friendly. The kitchen is well equipped and there is a cosy, homey feel to the whole place. Great views at the back of the garden and bikes available to rent to tour the local vineyards and sample the wine. — Hannah (2006-06-24)
This hostel was pretty run down, and all in all, very depressing. I moved to a different hostel after two days. — Anonymous (2004-12-27)

Warm and welcoming, this was my base whilst I tried to earn a few bucks to continue travelling on the South Island. I met my girlfriend Anja here, too. We're still together after 10 years. Greetings to Rob and Diane. — John the Pohm (2004-11-02)
