The Hostelz.com Review
HI - YHA Arthur's Pass, Mountain House Hostel is located on the main road in Arthur's Village. The owners are very helpful and more than willing if you need their help to book for YHA accommodation within NZ. Rooms are clean and worth the money. We recommend doing your grocery shopping before arriving Arthur Pass.

The Location

This hostel is located on the main road in Arthur's Village. The reception is on the left if you are coming from Christchurch, and adjacent to the small but adequate grocery shop, and opposite to the only restaurant in the village (food is great but expensive for budget travelers). There's a small carpark at front of reception. The hostel is within walking distance to the entrance of the hiking tracks.

Rooms and Bathrooms

This hostel has bungalows with three bedrooms or private rooms with shared toilet and bathroom. In the main reception building, each room is labeled with unique names such as the "Barker Room." The shared toilets and bathrooms are small, with hooks at the back of the door in each toilet and bathroom for hanging clothes/towels.

Common Spaces

The kitchen is big with lots of pots, pans, and utensils to use. There is a communal laundry near the kitchen (gold coins required). Take the spiral staircase behind the reception to go up to the lounge room, which has two sets of couches. The balcony is accessed from the door in the lounge room -- a great place to sit and relax with a glass of wine and three-hundred-sixty-degree view of Arthur Pass. There are two computers with internet located in the lounge room.

Summary

This is a great place to stay for a few days or longer. The backpackers are quiet but friendly. It's within walking distance to the hiking/walking tracks. Arthur Pass is small and has other accommodation, but we found this hostel to be affordable with clean rooms and adequate -- it is highly recommended.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
5  House was cozy, clean, with just four couples for enjoyable time toget The house plus guest room for 4 couples was the best environment for getting to know folks from around the world. A cozy fire led to conversation and games and it was very personal in addition to being clean plus ample room for cooking. We really enjoyed the hiking trail to Devil's Punchbowl and could have enjoyed a third night there. The caretakers did a good job as well. Most other hostels in our five week stay were larger units and not as conducive to making friends.  , USA ()
5  I also loved the cottages, the living area is shared and comes with woodburning stove and lots of good magazines. Nice grounds and there is a laundry in the back. Wobbly Kea restaurant and Bar in town is excellent, but be wary of early closing hours (as everywhere in rural NZ).  ()
5  An oasis in the mountains. We stayed only a night in this hostel and shared a private house with four other people (three double rooms). Nice wooden floors, fully equipped kitchen, superb bathroom. And if i compare it with other hostels in New Zealand -- all this at a reasonable price! After a good night's rest we climbed Avalanche Peak, while our car still remained at the hostel. Great service!  ()
5  best place we stayed. had one of the cottages just up the road. owner was really friendly and met some great people. stayed for three nights, spent one day reading by the log fire whilst it pissed it down outside, just like being at home!  ()
5  Lovely, lovely people here, and it has a small, friendly atmosphere. It's clean. Staff are very helpful, and they have valuable local information on weather and good tracks. This is one of the best hostels we've stayed at!  ()
