3 Good staff, poor building
This hostel is a bit of a trek up a hill but if you're coming from the airport it's on the bus route. The staff are really friendly and helpful and the noticeboards give good (and often cheap!) ideas on what to do on your stay (which is a good thing as Auckland has little to offer so all suggestions welcomed!). Rooms are basic and smell a bit fusty. A bit of air freshener wouldn't go a miss! Good kitchens though and a big common area. Internet access is pretty good too. Fine for a short stay which is exactly what Auckland should be -- the place definitely lacks soul. If you fancy the big cities, Wellington and Christchurch have much more to offer.

Situated in the corner of City Road and Liverpool Street,Auckland City YHA is ideally located for backpackers who wants good rest before moving on to their desired destination or start touring the country.City Road YHA is just 1 minute walk from Auckland's CBD and most famous road,Queen's Street, where most shops, and office buildings are located. You can find Asian food shops, banks,Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and mini marts all within walking distance. The Auckland Skytower is a mere 15 minutes walk from the Auckland City YHA.The port where the ferries leave for tours to other smalled islands is about 20 minutes walk away. The staffs are very friendly and helpful. There is a travel desk,3 telephones,3 computers with internet facilities, luggage storing facilities,a clean kitchen,a sun deck,a TV lounge, laundry facilities,a common room and a reading area. The hostel is accessible by bus,the Airbus, which stops right in front of the hostel. It's a 30 minute ride from the airport. The dorms are clean and reasonably priced ( $22 per night for a 4 bed dorm for a YHA member). You can book a free Stray Auckland tour through the travel desk, which is a half day Auckland tour and it takes you to Mt Eden,Auckland Harbour and Mission Bay Beach. Everything is situated close by and it's a clean and great place to be.I'l surely recommend this place for travellers planning their stay in Auckland.

4 Good place
This hostel has very few problems. I stayed in a double with my boyfriend. To start with negatives, there is a very steep hill up to it (not very nice with a backpack on). Also, the rooms get quite warm and all face onto the street, so with open windows it can be very noisy. Other than that I had no prob with this place, the room was nice, linen was clean. The toilets and showers were also very clean and tidy. Kitchen and common areas well equipped and spacious, staff very approachable. The sundeck is a nice addition.

2 Not the best start to a holiday ever, bit of a hike up Queen Street to get there, rooms basic but ok. staff -- some interested, some not. Bathroom situation on floor six -- odd to say the least, only things really going for it were the laundry which was ok and the internet access. In short for a long term stay look elsewhere, short term this is your place

4 We stayed here on four separate occasions through December 2004 to January 2005. The staff were very helpful and they booked all our hostels for one month while we walked around Auckland one afternoon. This place had basic double rooms but they were very comfortable. The kitchen was excellent and security was good in the evenings. A special shout-out to Tara for all her assistance when we needed help. A hostel must be good when you check out of another one early to go back there again, as we did on January 2nd after a bad experience elsewhere. This speaks volumes.

2 I stayed in this hostel in April 2004. I would not recommend it to anyone! It was filthy, especially the bathrooms. There were only one or two showers and the bathroom did not look like it had been cleaned in ages. Needless to say, I didn't even take a shower the next morning because I wasn't about to step foot in the shower. I brushed my teeth in the sink in the hallway. It is very loud being in the middle of the city; I didn't get much sleep. The hallways are very loud, too. The doors slam really hard. Two stars is my rating, and that is pushing it!
