The Hostelz.com Review
Colonsay Backpackers Lodge is located on the beautiful small island of Colonsay, two-and-a-half hours by ferry from Oban. This stunning, sunny island is well worth a visit, and Backpackers Lodge is the only budget accommodation available on the island.
The Location
The island of Colonsay, inhabited by around a hundred and twenty people year-round, is reached by a ferry that goes from Oban five times a week. Once you've arrived on the pier, to get to the Backpackers Lodge you turn right on the main road; walk for about an hour along this road and you'll find a sign to Backpackers' Lodge on your right hand side. It then is about five more minutes to the Lodge. Alternatively, you can arrange beforehand to be picked up at the pier and brought to the hostel by car for a cost. There are no buses on the island. If you want to get around a bit (and if you don't want to always walk an hour to the pier and shop), renting a bicycle is a good idea.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The Backpackers' Lodge consists of a house, which has three twin bedrooms upstairs and a four-person dorm room with bunk beds downstairs. In addition, there is a sleeping bothy (small building) that has three smaller rooms, each with a wooden bunk bed. So in total there are sixteen beds. The rooms and bathrooms are, most importantly, clean. The double rooms are quite spacious and have nice views. When you arrive at the hostel, there's no staff present but there is a letter on the table explaining which room you get to sleep in. There are no locks anywhere in the hostel except in both bathrooms; in fact, we think there are very few locks on the entire island, it's a very safe place.
There is a bathroom in the main house, as well as some showers and a toilet in the sleeping bothy. The bathroom in the main house is large enough to leave all your things, but the quality of the shower is not very good; pressure is very low, and there are rusty brown spots in the shower cabin. We did not try the shower in the sleeping bothy -- perhaps it is better.
Common Spaces
There is a kitchen and a cosy living room (with fire) in the main house, and there is a second bothy that contains a larger kitchen, a large table, and a relaxing area. The couches in the living room are very comfy, and if you wanted to, you could build a fire in the fireplace. There are no computers or WiFi connection in the hostel -- the Colonsay Hotel near the pier is the only place that does have internet. There are some books and games supplied in the living room.
The kitchen in the main house is well supplied with anything you'll need to cook your meals. It has a stove and a fridge, a microwave, a water kettle, a cafetierre, as well as cupboards to store your food. The kitchen in the kitchen bothy is larger and also has all you'll need.
Summary
The Backpackers' Lodge on Colonsay is the perfect place to go if you're looking for a quiet, active vacation off the beaten track on a gorgeous Scottish island. The Backpackers' Lodge is mainly frequented by people who want to see the island of Colonsay and stay a few days until the next ferry. When we were there in August we had the whole place to ourselves for a few days, but we're not sure it's always that quiet. It's very highly recommended!

Main house seems ok -- bothy terrible Stayed with a group of friends at the hostel. I was in one of the rooms in the bothy -- it was dreadful! It was dirty and smelt terribly damp, the bed and bedding were damp, I had to go outside in the rain to go to the loo in the the night, and the loos were also damp and dirty. The toilet compartments were very cramped. Not recommended, unless you are guaranteed a place in the main house, which seemed a lot better. — Anonymous , UK (2012-05-21)
