The Hostelz.com Review
Browns Hostel is a good base in the tiny town of Stromness for anyone exploring Orkney for a few days. It’s small but well-equipped, and the owner is very friendly and helpful.
The Location
The hostel is easy to find -- Stromness is a very small town, and it’s right on the main street. Note, though, that the entrance is off a small alleyway, not directly on the street. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the ferry terminal. Buses to Kirkwall and other spots on the main island also leave from the ferry terminal, making it easy to explore other areas.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is one dorm room with four beds (two sets of bunk beds), and there are also twin, double, and single rooms available. The single room is tiny -- just enough room for a single bed and a couple of feet of floor space! There is plenty of space in the dorm room for everyone’s packs. Bathrooms are individual with toilet/shower and are impeccably clean and well-maintained. There is ample room to hang your clothing and set your shower gear.
Common Spaces
There is one common area with well-equipped kitchen, table, seating, and one computer with free internet access. Free Wi-Fi access is also available throughout the hostel. There is no book exchange. Heating throughout the hostel is only on in the evenings, so it can be chilly depending what time of year you’re there. There is no outdoor space at this hostel.
Summary
This hostel is a good base for exploring Orkney, and the owner will be more than happy to help you figure out what to do and how to get there. It can be quiet (depending what time of year you go) and is very comfortable.
