Originally a stately gentleman's residence built in the late 1860s, it is now protected under the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. It's still in great shape too, and very clean.
The kitchen is a little on the small side, but never gets too busy. The dining room, which also has a piano, is huge. There are separate TV and video lounges with over 100 free movies to choose from. Beds are comfortable, although there is a small extra charge for duvets -- just use your sleeping bag. The showers are excellent and there are plenty of bathrooms, all of which are cleaned regularly.
The best asset of the Tripinn is its owners. An extremely friendly elderly couple who refer to the building as their "big old beauty," they will go out of their way to make you feel at home. You'll meet all kinds of travellers at the Tripinn, from family holiday makers to groups of friends to solo travellers.
There's more to do in Westport than people think -- white water rafting, adventure caving, horse trekking, surf rafting, mountain biking, argo trips, scenic tours, kayaking, cave walks, heli-rafting, jet boating, and some awesome underworld rafting. There are also plenty of walks and overnight tramps in the area. It's very easy to stay at the Tripinn for much longer than you originally intend to.
