Hostelz.com's Review
HI - Graz - Jugend & Familiengästehaus Graz Hostel is large and impersonal, lacks a kitchen, and feels like a hotel. There is a common area on the ground floor in front of reception that is impersonal and feels more like a lobby of a hotel.

The Location

The hostel is a fifteen-minute walk from the train station, or a five-minute bus ride. There are large arrows and signs pointing to the hostel. The neighborhood is a little seedy, with strip clubs just around the corner, but does not feel unsafe. It is about a twenty-minute walk to downtown Graz with no direct line of public transportation from the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms have up to eight or ten people but no bunk beds. Each bed has an overhead light and a corresponding locker. The doors to the room can lock, but must be locked with a key after being opened and most times are left unlocked by other guests. The dorm rooms are large have plenty of space between the beds. The showers are in separate rooms from the toilets and are kept clean. The showers are basic stall showers but have plenty of shelf space outside the stall to place clothing and towels. The toilet rooms also have plenty of space between the sink and the toilet but are not cleaned every day and the trash cans are usually overflowing with trash.

Common Spaces

The main common area is the reception/entry hallway, with tables and chairs set up for use. There are two computers for common use and the Wi-Fi is free but only accessible on the ground floor. There is a large breakfast eating area but it is only open for breakfast. In the basement, there are rooms for common use but they aren't labeled and aren't advertised. There is also a large rock climbing wall and jungle gym that guests and non guests can pay to use. This causes many non-guests to hang out in the common area lobby. This is not a social hostel as it feel more like a hotel with a lobby area.

Summary

This hostel is clean and bright and well kept but not social. It feels like a hotel and the guests treat it as such and not like a hostel.

HI - Graz - Jugend & Familiengästehaus Graz Hostel Reviews from the Web
Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
4   Very clean, excellent breakfast, city centre location. A family hostel with sport orientation (a huge climbing wall belongs to the facility). All that could be improved: a better organised social room/meeting venue. There are several dispersed locations but not a centred venue a kitchen accessible to guests. An excellent hostel. I strongly recommend.  , age 65, australia ()
3   Ok, but not really clean It was ok, the bed was alredy made, which was perfect but the room wasn't really clean -- a lot of dust and spiders. Great breakfast. Location is ok but nothing special.  ()
4   In general is ok Clean, staff was ok. Could be closer to city center -- but actually, good enough, we was going by foot about 15 min. Graz is beautiful city.  , Latvia ()
3   It's an HI, it's what you expect the best part of this hostel is that the beds are made for you, which is so nice after the good walk there from the train station. the centre of town is also a trek so there's actually not much around the hostel at all. this hostel is just like any other HI hostel in central europe -- it's clean; has nice bathrooms; good breakfast; no guest kitchen; and full of families and tour groups, which makes it kind of boring, but good enough.  ()
4  Well, even though I had my worst night here it wasnt the hostel's fault. I had some very loud, inconsiderate neighbours who were shouting, laughing, singing, and even playing a guitar until past 1 in the morning. I complained and I think people like that should be banned from YHI hostels. But the dorm was lovely. Very clean and comfortable. They even made the bed for you which is nice if your bed making skills are as bad as mine. There are good signs along the way to help find the hostel. Breakfast is included.  ()
4  It has clean room with clean sheets and towels. The staff and friendly and they have activities in the garden. And Graz it's a lovely place.  ()
5  Excellent hotel-like breakfast. Clean room, excellent bathroom with towels. Cozy garden around the hostel. Quite close to train station. Polite personnel. Overall, it is one of the best hostels I've visited. Non-free internet.  ()
4  This place is great, clean and safe. The staff are friendly and helpful. It is within easy walking distance of the city center and close to the main train station. It seems to be very well suited toward families with small children but single lone travelers like myself are equally welcomed. I would come back here when I'm in Graz again.  ()
