The Carn Dearg Youth Hostel is a remote, oceanfront place to stay when you want to relax and have some peace and quiet. Perhaps the only way to get there is by car and definitely the only way to get to the local town is by car as Carn Dearg hostel sits alone on the ocean road wrapping around the bottom side of the peninsula. It is an old hunting lodge that was donated to be a youth hostel around fifty years ago.
The lounge common area has a really cosy atmosphere, with the warmth of the afternoon sun coming through the wide windows. There are plenty of books and games and even a piano. From this room, the view over the ocean to the Isle of Skye is amazing, especially when the moon is full.
In the hallway there is a lot of information and pamphlets about local activities. The rooms are a little dull but you still know that you are in a lodge with the dark brown wooden walls. The dining area is a bit like a cafeteria but its nice and bright with some views. The kitchen is closed off at the back of the dining area and is a bit unwelcoming but nevertheless clean. The bathrooms are also clean but there is only one shower with just a shower curtain for privacy. There are washing and drying facilities and the reception has a small amount of food stuffs for sale. Carn Dearg SYHA at Gairloch is a great place to stay to relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery.
