The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Jugendherberge Melk an der Donau Hostel is located in Melk, Austria, a beautiful town worth exploring.
The Location
The hostel is quite easy to find, but it is a bit far from the center (a fifteen-minute walk) especially considering Melk is a small town.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers two kinds of bedrooms -- four-bedded mixed dorms (which can be booked as private rooms for one or two persons) or eight-bedded mixed dorms. This hostel is not crowded at all and during our stay in September, it was practically empty and we had a four-bedded dorm for one person only, so there is no need to book private rooms. The rooms are not huge, but they are alright.
Only bad point is that when we went, rooms were full of mosquitoes, which made sleeping quite difficult (as they flew around us, making lots of noise, and biting us) and the hunt lasted all night long.
Shower is en-suite, but there is no lock on the door, so if you are staying with people you don’t know that can be quite a problem. Bathrooms are shared and facilities are quite clean, as at most HI hostels.
Common Spaces
Common spaces offer nothing exceptional -- a lounge, TV, and videotape-recorder; a small garden with a barbecue area; and a bicycle storage room. There is no internet (even if it says so on the website) or at least it wasn’t working when we stayed there.
One detail that made our stay quite complicated is that reception and arriving times are from 4 to 9 p.m. Since we hadn’t read that, when we arrived (at 1 p.m.), after a fifteen-minute walk, we found the unpleasant surprise that the hostel was closed, and had to go back to town with our heavy backpacks and pay for a locker near the tourist information office.
At last, if you leave before 8 a.m., you will not get the chance to eat from their free buffet breakfast, and they won’t even prepare a single coffee for you.
Summary
This is a below-average hostel that will probably suit you if you are only staying to sleep, but don’t expect anything else. It has no character, facilities are just ok, staff are not very helpful, and it is empty, which makes it boring if you are staying on your own.
