Hostelz.com's Review
If you're doing the Central Otago Rail Trail, Peters Farm Hostel is a wonderful place to stay just outside Ranfurly. Peter's place is one of the last remaining old homesteads in the area and will give you a touch of the region's history as well as a comfortable place to stay. It's worth staying more than one night here too if you can afford the extra time, as they have complimentary kayaks, fishing rods, and gold pans you can use. Plus you might like to relax on the old property grounds or do some hiking or local touring.

The Location

Ranfurly could be your first or last night on the trail depending on which way you're doing the rail trail. Peters place is actually about two kilometers out of town, so you will definitely need to have rung or booked ahead before you head out there. They do provide meals some nights, so check first or bring your own food. The area immediately surrounding Peters is all farmland, so you wake up with wonderful views in the morning. It's magic sitting on the veranda and watching the dawn break.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Peters is not really big, which means there's lots of room to move about. The shared room has just four beds and they are individual, old-style beds with good, heavy doonas. The rooms are thoughtfully decorated, comfortable, and warm.

Common Spaces

There's a great lounge, a large kitchen, plus plenty of outdoor sitting around the veranda. Peter often has some WOOFers on site that are happy to sit around and chat into the evening. It's a very sociable and friendly place.

Summary

Peter is also a photographer who produced an excellent photographic book of the Rail Trail some years ago -- it's worth getting a copy and asking him to sign it while you're here. There's a really good complimentary continental breakfast included with the room price. This is a great place to come as a group as it is also connected with another property five hundred meters away, so you can have large parties come through.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
5  This was one of the best weeks of my life — the memories are great! My five-year-old son had a wonderful time as well — great fun for all the family. You felt immediately at home upon arrival, like arriving at a long-lost relative's. Peter is very friendly and his hostel takes you back to better days where life was slower and people had time to chat. The only sad part is I didn't get back there this year and had not nearly as enjoyable time in New Zealand. This must be one of the best spots on the globe! I am happy if you convey my comments back to Peter, as I have meant to write since and have only just located this on the Net.  ()
