Hostelz.com's Review

Sir Cedric's Bungi Backpackers Hostel is a lively hostel set in the centre of Queenstown that offers plenty of freebies during your stay.

The Location

Sir Cedrics Bungi Backpackers Hostel is located a short walk from the centre of Queenstown on the suburban Stanley Street. This hostel is located only minutes from Queenstown’s central area, meaning many of the famous attractions are very close by. These include, but are not limited to, The Ice Bar, Skyline Gondola, Queenstown Botanical Gardens, and Lake Wakatipu. To get to the hostel from the bus stop that is in the town centre, travel on Frankton Road up the hill and the hostel is on the left at the top of the hill.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel houses a variety of different rooms including dorm rooms of varying size, twin rooms, and double rooms. The hostel has one main building, which is just one level, and is in good condition inside and out. We stayed in a private double room, which contains a double bed and a dressing table. The bed is fairly comfortable, but there is very little storage space, which makes the room feel very cramped. Also one of the walls is a very thin partition wall, which means the sound travels through it a lot. Finally the door is locked using a standard key and overall the room is average.

The bathroom facilities in the hostel are good as they are in a decent condition and are clean. The toilets and the showers in this hostel are in separate rooms, with the shower containing only a shower cubicle and a hook on the door. The toilets have a wash basin with a mirror above it and a toilet too. Both the shower and toilet rooms are well lit and of a reasonable size.

Common Spaces

This hostel has several common areas, including the kitchen, TV/DVD and dining room and the garden. The kitchen is very clean and also of a decent size with several large fridge/freezers, oven, and all of the other kitchen essentials such as a kettle and toaster. The common room is very spacious with plenty of sofas as well as tables to eat at and a TV with a DVD/VHS player. Finally the garden area has sun loungers, outside seating, and also a BBQ for when the weather gets warmer as well as a sauna and volleyball net. This hostel offers free Wi-Fi, free popcorn, free international calls, and also free vegetable soup with bread from 6 p.m. every evening. The atmosphere of this hostel is very friendly and the hostel organises evening activities, such as bar crawls and BBQs, which is a great way to meet people.

Summary

Overall, this is good hostel that has an excellent location and a very friendly, party atmosphere.

Top notch
Lovely atmosphere -- super chilled out. Friendly, switched on staff, and relaxing surroundings. Loved the hammocks and porch swings. Very cheap rooms too. A little worn around the edges but doesn't really suffer for it.

Bungi Backpackers is a friendly and affordable hostel on a quiet street close to the centre of Queenstown. There is a large garden with a free spa pool, hammocks, and an outdoor dining area. The Location The hostel can be found at 15 Sydney Street near the junction with Stanley Street. It is a peaceful location with mountain views, yet just five minutes' walk downhill to the centre of town along Shotover Street. There are parking spaces on the road in front of the hostel. Rooms and Bathrooms Dorm rooms are a mixed bag. We slept in a lovely large room that had a wash basin, bunk beds for eight people, and lots of luggage space. Some other dorms were quite small and lacked a wash basin. Private rooms with twin or double beds are available as well. The bathroom facilities consist of separate toilets and showers dotted around the hostel which are well-maintained and have plenty of space to change. Common Spaces The common spaces in Bungi Backpackers are well-equipped with modern facilities and an original colorful décor, but they can get a little crowded in the evenings when the hostel is full. The atmosphere is fairly subdued, but the staff and other guests are friendly and helpful. There are two adjoining kitchens (each fully-equipped), and free soup is on offer every evening. The main sitting and dining area has a television with Sky TV, a Playstation, and a free video library. There is another small dining room, and good laundry facilities including a drying room. A couple of internet computers are provided along with twenty-four-hour wireless internet. But the best thing about the hostel is the spacious grounds which surround it. There is a volleyball net and a variety of places to chill out including hammocks, picnic benches, and a free spa pool (clothing optional). Summary Bungi Backpackers is an excellent hostel near the centre of Queenstown while also being a quiet place to relax. The common areas are top-notch, albeit quite busy at peak times, and the large grounds are a bonus. With the dorm prices being amongst the cheapest in Queenstown, Bungi's would be our first choice of accommodation in the adventure capital of New Zealand.

Great place -- good prices
This is a great choice to stay in Queenstown. The location is good -- five minutes (uphill) from the town but nice and quiet. The staff are some of the best I've come across in New Zealand -- very friendly and chatty. The rooms are clean -- stayed in a double which was in a separate "shed" behind the hostel -- nice and private but a bit of a nuisance to walk to the loo at night! Common areas are well equipped but are insufficient for the numbers staying -- particularly between 6 and 8 p.m. the kitchen is basically inaccessible. Showers and toilets are always clean and are in good condition.

Dated and dirty!
I stayed in this hostel a number of years ago and based on that visit headed here as a base for a weeks boarding. The place has not been decorated since, and I doubt cleaned in places. It is friendly enough and location is good but could do with some modernisation ASAP!

I wasn't a great fan of this hostel as I felt there were too many people staying there for its size! It was clean enough but the other backpackers didn't seem to keep the kitchen clean, etc. Friendly staff, though.
