The Hostelz.com Review
Bungi Backpackers is a friendly and affordable hostel on a quiet street close to the centre of Queenstown. There is a large garden with a free spa pool, hammocks, and an outdoor dining area.

The Location

The hostel can be found at 15 Sydney Street near the junction with Stanley Street. It is a peaceful location with mountain views, yet just five minutes' walk downhill to the centre of town along Shotover Street. There are parking spaces on the road in front of the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorm rooms are a mixed bag. We slept in a lovely large room that had a wash basin, bunk beds for eight people, and lots of luggage space. Some other dorms were quite small and lacked a wash basin. Private rooms with twin or double beds are available as well. The bathroom facilities consist of separate toilets and showers dotted around the hostel which are well-maintained and have plenty of space to change.

Common Spaces

The common spaces in Bungi Backpackers are well-equipped with modern facilities and an original colorful décor, but they can get a little crowded in the evenings when the hostel is full. The atmosphere is fairly subdued, but the staff and other guests are friendly and helpful. There are two adjoining kitchens (each fully-equipped), and free soup is on offer every evening. The main sitting and dining area has a television with Sky TV, a Playstation, and a free video library. There is another small dining room, and good laundry facilities including a drying room. A couple of internet computers are provided along with twenty-four-hour wireless internet. But the best thing about the hostel is the spacious grounds which surround it. There is a volleyball net and a variety of places to chill out including hammocks, picnic benches, and a free spa pool (clothing optional).

Summary

Bungi Backpackers is an excellent hostel near the centre of Queenstown while also being a quiet place to relax. The common areas are top-notch, albeit quite busy at peak times, and the large grounds are a bonus. With the dorm prices being amongst the cheapest in Queenstown, Bungi's would be our first choice of accommodation in the adventure capital of New Zealand.

3 Great place -- good prices
This is a great choice to stay in Queenstown. The location is good -- five minutes (uphill) from the town but nice and quiet. The staff are some of the best I've come across in New Zealand -- very friendly and chatty. The rooms are clean -- stayed in a double which was in a separate "shed" behind the hostel -- nice and private but a bit of a nuisance to walk to the loo at night! Common areas are well equipped but are insufficient for the numbers staying -- particularly between 6 and 8 p.m. the kitchen is basically inaccessible. Showers and toilets are always clean and are in good condition.

2 I wasn't a great fan of this hostel as I felt there were too many people staying there for its size! It was clean enough but the other backpackers didn't seem to keep the kitchen clean, etc. Friendly staff, though.

5 I was sad to leave this place. It's awesome, one of the best places I've stayed. Mitzi and Dan are quality and know their stuff about the area and activities. The hostel is cozy and clean and there's free soup at 6 every night.
