The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Olympic Hostel, Port Townsend is conveniently located on Fort Worden (a former military base). There are many things to do on Fort Worden -- the beach, museums, science center, lighthouse, fishing, hiking are all at your fingertips.

The Location

The place is easily accessible by car or public transit and there is limited parking available right outside of the hostel. They have a lovely garden in the backyard as well as a picnic table in on the side of the establishment.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorm rooms contain six twin-size beds and some have table space for books or other items -- each bed has a large locker as well as storage underneath it. There is one bathroom to be shared among six guests with a small but clean shower area. The room is spacious with availability for changing clothes.

Common Spaces

There is a shared kitchen -- nice and well-equipped with a shared refrigerator -- with large table and many chairs. The dining area has an open room with sofa and piano. There is no TV here and no computer use or internet. They offer free coffee and self-serve pancake breakfast each morning. This hostel is subdued but somewhat social. During our visit, the annual wooden boat festival drew in a lot of guests and people would sit at the kitchen table and talk most evenings, although they ended early (before 11 p.m.).

Summary

We do not like the strict check-out time and lockout times (each day the hostel is closed from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.). We arrived early and luckily bumped into the owner, who let us drop off our luggage.

The surroundings make this site even more interesting
We really look forward to staying here for the convenience and price. We also appreciate the opportunity to meet new people who come from far away places.

Very Nice
I did want more privacy, so I opted for a private room. I stayed for two nights, taking a day trip to Seattle. It was $28 per night. The ferry is free going Eastbound. The director and his manager were both friendly and knowledgeable. My room was large -- the bed was better than most motels. The water pressure in the showers was incredible. The kitchen is huge and they offer a free, make your own pancake breakfast, and Starbucks coffee. You would have to be an idiot to stay anywhere else!

Nice clean hostel. Dorm rooms are open-bunk style, I do prefer more privacy. Bed have squeaky springs. Bathrooms clean. Friendly manager. Very safe and scenic location. Not a party place -- nice and quiet. I had stayed in '96, and ten years later, still a great place to stay when visiting the Olympic area.

Very very clean. The staff recomended excellent dining. It was quite and low key. I do not think parties are why you come.

I stayed one night here in August 2004, my first at a hostel. The manager was very courteous, and the accommodations were clean. I stayed in the men's dorm. I am returning this August 2005, with my wife, and we will try to get a private room. The camaraderie of the other travelers is what attracts me back to this hostel experience. This hostel at Fort Worden is a beautiful military camp setting, right on the sea. A very picturesque location. It has a great gathering room to have a meal (bring your own and share) and talk with other travelers.

I have stayed here twice, once with girlfriends and once with my husband. Great experiences both times. Met interesting people at breakfast too!

It was fun going to this hostel. It was right next to the bunkers. Our girl scout troop stayed here for a night and really enjoyed the experience. The man in charge was very pleasent.
