The Hostelz.com Review
Off route 101, in front of the ocean and nestled within the trees, lies Redwoods Hostel. The hostel is in a big and cozy old house that is kept excellent condition, complete with front and side porches looking into trees and ocean. Inside, it is clean and warm, with a large lounge with several couches and board games for gathering, an exceptionally clean and well-organized kitchen, and a large dining area with several tables for guests. Guest rooms are private or with bunks. The hostel has large windows and is decorated with a color scheme to compliment the dark and lush redwood trees outside, making it warm and inviting. It is a comfortable place to stay.

Some given time from each guest contributes to the cleanliness of the hostel. There are directions within the kitchen for how to wash dishes and where to label and store food, and signs are neatly placed around the house to remind guests of hostel regulations. Before each guest leaves in the morning, he or she is asked to complete a chore; those awake earliest get to choose which chore to complete. The chores range from cleaning a bathroom to sweeping the porches.

Because many staff members call the hostel a home, the hostel must close its doors everyday from 10am to 5pm; its daily office hours are 8am to 10am and 5pm to 9pm. While it's closed it offers suggestions for exploring Redwoods National Park within walking distance. The hostel has a daily curfew of 11pm for the staff to rest and for the safety of their guests; there isn't much to do in Redwoods National Park after sundown anyway. Guests often gather in the dining room or the lounge to spend the evening socializing.

The hostel is a flag-stop for the Greyhound bus. It is directly off of route 101, visible on the left for vehicles heading southbound but around a corner from the north. Reservations are recommended because with only 30 beds the hostel can fill up quickly during the busy season. The hostel is closed in December, January, and February, except for groups of 15 or more. The hostel does not provide internet access or a TV, but does provide sheets, towels, and smoking areas.

Loved it!
I stayed at the Klamath Hostel for a couple of days in 1989. It is such a beautiful location and the people were so friendly. I hope to visit again next year when my son and I travel across the country.

Superb! stayed here for two nights. Cleanest and most friendly hostel i've ever stayed at. In beautiful woodland but also next to the ocean at the front of the property. Take plenty of food/supplies as no local stores. Would highly recommend!

Stayed there in June 2004. Friendly lady who managed the place. Good place to go to visit the Redwoods, Arcata, and go up into Oregon. There was a school group from Grants Pass, Oregon and they were fun to hang with, wish they stayed for another night.

I am also the great, great granddaughter of Louis P. DeMartin. My great Grandpa Milton Demartin refurbished and repaired the house and my grandpa David DeMartin was born in it. The hostel is now up for public bid. I hate the fact that the land the Government claimed "condemned" and paid my family the minimal amount they could is now up for the public to buy.

Probably one of the, if not the, best hostel you will ever stay in. Staff are excellent, facilities are immaculate, and the travelers we met were very cool. The pictures on this site are not representative of the kitchen. It has been completely renovated with two beautiful gas stoves and fancy-looking fridges. The hostel is near the highway, but we personally did not hear much if any traffic. Kristen and Tom (staff) were extremely helpful, caring, and knowledgeable of the surrounding areas. The hours have also been extended. There is no curfew, as now they've added a keyless entry pad. A couple of trails lead directly to the hostel and there is a little beach across the street for killer sunsets. Chores seem optional, but when you get there and see the fabulous hostel, you might not mind. Plenty of information about the redwood forest and the history of the hostel all around the hostel.

I am the great, great granddaughter of Louis DeMartin. It was a great treat to come and stay where my family was raised and started at. It was a wonderful stay, and I would love to come back again soon!

I loved this hostel. The location is perfect and what a setting! It's the only structure along this stretch of Highway 101 and it's just across the highway — 100 meters or so — from a lovely beach. A friendly staff and clean facilities highlighted my two-night stay during April 2004. There are no food markets or cafes nearby and since the only food available is what you bring with you, make sure you have enough when you arrive. As an added bonus, Greyhound makes a regular stop on the highway just in front of the hostel.

I stayed here in July 2004. This is a fantastic hostel that makes a good base if you plan to visit the Oregon Caves or do a lot of hiking in the various redwood forests surrounding the hostel and the region. A very friendly couple now manages the hostel, and they are very nice. The only complaints I have are: at the time of my visit, there were no chairs out on the side porch, so you couldn't sit outside and enjoy the surroundings; the hostel is right above Highway 1 and can be a bit noisy with road traffic (trucks); when the hostel is crowded (which it was when I stayed) the few common areas get very jammed with people; and the main women's bedroom gets very uncomfortable when full (ten women in a room that might be better with two fewer beds). But note that even with these "drawbacks," I will return for another stay in October 2004. The cost and the proximity to the BEST hiking in the world make this a must-stay!

WOW! What a beautiful location. This is a very comfortable hostel with lots of room for guests to meet others. It has a nice, friendly staff who have lots of local information on what to do while here. The redwood trees are just incredible--don't miss the chance to be out in them and experience their majesty. The hostel is also across from a beatiful beach!

I loved it. A nice family managed it. It was a very clean, and very friendly family place. It also had a lot of young people there. I have been to different hostels, but this one had the cleanest bathrooms by far.

Very clean. Well organized. The staff are polite and friendly. The beds comfortable. A window overlooked the Pacific Ocean. This place is heaven!
