The Hostelz.com Review
HI - YHA Mount Cook Hostel is the only hostel available in Mount Cook, thus is the most affordable for the budget travelers. It is about ten minutes' drive out of the main village centre, so is only accessible by car or bus. The hostel is clean -- the bathrooms/lounge/kitchen are superb! This hostel has a small convenience store but food is pricey so we recommend doing your grocery/beverage shopping prior to arriving Mount Cook.

The Location

It is about five minutes' drive out of the main village centre, and is only accessible by car. It is surrounded by three hundred-sixty-degree lovely scenery of the mountains. We recommend booking this hostel in advance, as it can be fully booked very fast.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Unlike other hostels of its kind, the rooms are spacious, clean, and smell excellent! The rooms are very secure. The disadvantages are that the majority of the beds are foam and not comfortable, and the bunk beds are squeaky. Despite these, we love the bedrooms as they smells so great! There are lockers to hire in the hallways.

There is a bathroom with two separate showers where the dorms/rooms are located plus a private bathroom on the other end adjacent to the TV room. The private bathroom has a small area with hooks for your clean clothes and towel, plus a small rack for your bathroom utilities, and space for you to change prior to stepping out of the bathroom. The sink and adjacent shelves are made from stainless materials.

Common Spaces

Common spaces include one big kitchen with three big stoves and a number of common spices and salt bottles for communal use; a separate dinning area; a small but cozy lounge room; a separate TV room and computer/internet room; sitting areas -- there is outside seating excellent scenery to enjoy lunch during the summer months; and a small collection of books. Travelers tend to stick in their small groups to cook/each/chat/watch TV, so don't expect a social hostel.

Summary

Overall, we love this hostel. The atmosphere is excellent and it is clean, tidy, fun, secure, and in a great location. This is the only hostel that we found has a good smell in the bedroom/dorm rooms. We must also add that there is an awesome small sauna room. We highly recommend this hostel to budget travelers.

4  Pretty good -- not that you have a choice anyway! It's not the best YHA in New Zealand but considering its remote location, it's pretty good. The kitchen was a bit congested and the sauna wasn't working but other than that a very comfortable, cosy place to stay.  , UK ()
4  Impressive for a hostel with no local competition Overall a warm, comfy, hostel with clean dorm rooms. The bunks could do with a bit of an oil and there wasn't really much space to store your stuff but we had a really enjoyable stay. Also has a well organised kitchen and helpful staff.  , New Zealand ()
3  Ok hostel, great location I stayed here back in Sept. 2005. This place kinda seemed to have a "cliquey" vibe with most of the people staying there with was a little irritating. It was quite cozy though -- really comfortable beds and a really cool location. Mt. Cook is like right there. Definitely go on some hikes around the area -- it was beautiful when I was there and the scenery was some of the best I've seen anywhere. The only game in town for backpackers -- worth staying here just for the natural beauty.  , USA ()
3  Not much choice around but our room did have a pungent odour -- smelt like gasoline.  ()
5  You don't really have many options in Mt. Cook, seeing that there is ONE hotel, ONE motel, and ONE backpackers, but I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. The rooms were clean, roomy, and there was an endless supply of hot water (VERY important after a long cold hike!). And the staff were fantastic. You'll be in good hands at Mt. Cook YHA!  ()
