4 Pretty good -- not that you have a choice anyway!
It's not the best YHA in New Zealand but considering its remote location, it's pretty good. The kitchen was a bit congested and the sauna wasn't working but other than that a very comfortable, cosy place to stay.

4 Impressive for a hostel with no local competition
Overall a warm, comfy, hostel with clean dorm rooms. The bunks could do with a bit of an oil and there wasn't really much space to store your stuff but we had a really enjoyable stay. Also has a well organised kitchen and helpful staff.

3 Ok hostel, great location
I stayed here back in Sept. 2005. This place kinda seemed to have a "cliquey" vibe with most of the people staying there with was a little irritating. It was quite cozy though -- really comfortable beds and a really cool location. Mt. Cook is like right there. Definitely go on some hikes around the area -- it was beautiful when I was there and the scenery was some of the best I've seen anywhere. The only game in town for backpackers -- worth staying here just for the natural beauty.

3 Not much choice around but our room did have a pungent odour -- smelt like gasoline.

5 You don't really have many options in Mt. Cook, seeing that there is ONE hotel, ONE motel, and ONE backpackers, but I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. The rooms were clean, roomy, and there was an endless supply of hot water (VERY important after a long cold hike!). And the staff were fantastic. You'll be in good hands at Mt. Cook YHA!
