The Hostelz.com Review
Bakers Lodge is around a fifteen-minute steady walk from the bus stop, information centre, and the centre of town. Reception is straight in front of you as you enter. If it's unmanned, there is a number to call for attention. When manned, the staff are helpful -- they let you know what's on and what's worth going to see. They saved us some time just by letting us know the bus called there everyday before going onto the official bus stop.
Rooms are quite spacious and clean. Many have en-suite facilities, but if your room is not en-suite there are bathrooms on the ground floor. All are clean and have a regular supply of hot water. The kitchen is large and has everything you could want for everyday cooking. Out the back of the kitchen is a large garden area that has lots of picnic style tables for dining. We found this the best place to eat, as the weather most days in this area is awesome. There are quite a number of annoying flies though -- the place isn't dirty so it may have just been the smell of food. You can also eat in the kitchen. It seats around twelve people.
Upstairs at this property you will find a TV lounge but channels are limited -- however, there's plenty of space for reading and the like though. We were in the room next to the lounge and noise is not a problem. We found the hostel to be very nice and welcoming, but didn't meet anyone staying there for longer one night. It seems people just use Motoueka as a staging location for the Abel Tasman National Park.
