Hostelz.com's Review
The Attic Backpackers, located five floors up, has a modern feel to it. Set in downtown Auckland, it's probably the only hostel that has an old-school lift, meaning you have to manually open and close the lift doors. It's clean and friendly, with a wide range of people staying here.

The Location

It's easy to get to The Attic from the airport -- take the airbus and get off at stop #3 (not necessarily the third stop, but the driver will announce "stop number 3" which is on Queen Street), and it's just around the corner, up a slight hill. This hostel is within very easy walking distance to surrounding Auckland attractions.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorm rooms are basic but tend to be spacious enough even to accommodate long-term guests without creating too much clutter. The mattresses and pillows don't have the sag of older, well-used mattresses, and tend to be very comfy. With enough long-term guests and people coming and going, the doors tend to never to be locked, but there are lockers in which you can store your belongings down the hall (not in your room).

The bathrooms are spacious and gender separate; the women's room has lots of mirrors and a hair dryer/straightener for use. Showers are decent as well, with good water pressure and temperatures.

Common Spaces

Though the hallways are a basic white that could use some decoration, there are a bunch of spaces to hang out. There's a lobby area next to reception that has chairs and tables. Then there's a small TV room, and a "chill" room, which is nice because you don't have to be subjected to the TV when you just want to chill. There's no book exchange there yet, though.

The kitchen is spacious, with a variety of seating options. There's also a piano in the dining area for those feeling inspired! Off of the kitchen is an outdoor-type area, though it has a roof and screening, it still has an outside feel. There is even fake grass on the ground and benches -- maybe it's not entirely comfortable, but it is unique.

Summary

Once you get used to the elevator (or you can just take the stairs), this hostel has a certain appeal. It's a nice break from the general trend of hostels with several good features.
